British Comics: Scheme Comix #1

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Reviews,Independent

Scheme ComixI like anthology comics. I think they can be a great showcase for both a writer and an artist and if you’re in the mood for a short story instead of a long multi-part epic, they can really hit the spot.

That’s what led me to Scheme Comix, a new indy anthology from Happy World Productions and produced in cooporation with Arts Council Scotland. It’s a pocket-sized 32-page black and white collection of “5 tales of Suspense! Shocks! And Romance!” according to the cover blurb.

All of them are illustrated by Kev Harper, with writing from David Walker, Sharon Irvine and Louise C. Gordon.

Regardless of how long corporate comics survive, I like that there’s a vibrant group of DIY-ers driven to do it themselves, either on the internets or, in this case, print.

I like the variety of stories here: a private eye, space babes, and what looks like the beginning of a wild road trip. That’s right on the money as far as I’m concerned. And artist Kev Harper is definitely someone to watch.

It’s harder, unfortunately, to get a handle on the writers - the stories are short and some of them continue in the next issue. That barely leaves enough room to get the ball rolling before the “To Be Continued” caption pops up.

I think complete-in-one issue stories would be better for the audience and better as a showcase for writers' skills (also better in case of an irregular publishing schedule). But, I’m not the editor and it ain’t my magazine.

I enjoyed Scheme and I wish Kev and his band of merry anthologists the best of luck. I’ll be curious to see where this goes from here.

Here’s a review of Scheme that first lead me to the gang.

Comic Book Jobs: DC Comics (Burbank)

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,DC Comics

Garbage ManPreviously, DC Comics in Burbank was looking for a Creative Services Coordinator.

Now they’re looking for a Creative Services Manager.

You’ll be working in the Creative Services department in conjunction with Warner Brothers Consumer Products, “overseeing and guiding creative,” and creating/providing “materials for licensees concerning concept, character, story and design when requested.”

They’d prefer someone with a college degree and 3-5 years experience in creative licensing and brand management, experience with highly confidential materials (can’t let the schematics for the new Green Lantern figure hit the internets too soon), and a “passion for DC characters and properties.”

Good luck, job seekers!

Derek Ruiz, Daniel Sampere Adapt Bestselling Novel The Alchemist

Posted by Robin PaulsonCategories:Reviews

The Alchemist: A Graphic Novel

Similar to novel-to-film adaptations, comic book conversions become more popular with each bestselling phenomenon (even Lady Gaga and Stephenie Meyer have made their mark in the medium). Not surprisingly, Paulo Coelho's successful allegory The Alchemist quickly found a home in the graphic novel world at Harper Collins. Adapted by Derek Ruiz and inked by Daniel Sampere, The Alchemist: A Graphic Novel does not flow like a history-heavy, action-packed journey drama one needs to re-read several times to fully understand its message. Instead, Ruiz penned Coelho's new take on the classic tale of following one's heart. The story, set against the backdrop of early 20th century Spain and Egypt, follows Santiago, a young man on a quest to fulfill his personal legend -- his destiny. Educated as a boy, Santiago chooses to live the life of a shepherd in hopes of traveling and seeing the world first-hand. A recurrent dream pointing toward hidden treasure soon thwarts his plan, and he then meets an interesting array of folks (what good is a self-discovery trek without those?) along the way.

Setting Coelho's original text aside, Ruiz's writing leaves little room for implicit treasures or furthering religious motifs. While there are plenty of enjoyable simple tales, there is a yearning for detail and depth in this novel that neither Ruiz nor Sampere attend to. With that said, the story's simple, unassuming presentation delivers Santiago's lessons very straightforwardly, avoiding any muddled, pretentious pit stops. With just weeks left until the winter holidays, a copy of this novel would make a nice gift for light comic book readers or anyone looking for a good story. Fans of the original novel can rest assured -- Coelho has stamped his seal of approval on the book: "It was an old dream of mine to have The Alchemist as a graphic novel. This version exceeds my expectations and is a beautiful manifestation of what I originally imagined while crafting this story." The book hit shelves this past Tuesday -- now that Black Friday is over, you need not fear going to the mall.

Weekend Reading: Green Lantern, Joss Whedon, Jack Kirby And James Bond

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Movies,Television,DC Comics

Green Lantern I spent Thanksgiving outside the US this year so I’m stuffed with stir-fried shrimp and chocolate ice cream, which made for an excellent breakfast of leftovers, because that's just how I roll.

If you’re out and about shopping now for the holidays, here’s the best Holiday Shopping Gift Guide you’re ever going to need for the 2010 credit card season, courtesy of Tom Spurgeon at The Comics Reporter.

Let’s see what else is going on:

Green Lantern: If you’ve been in awe of the new Ryan Reynolds trailer for Green Lantern, there’s at least one person with an alternate view worth reading: Ricky Sprague at Project Child Murdering Robot. “The Green Lantern Corps is their ‘muscle,’ enforcing their rules of righteousness. They take creatures from various parts of the universe and have them fight 'evil.' There are lots of different GLs, made up of different species from different planets. You can see where this is starting to get lame.”

Strips: The Guelph Mercury interviews Jay Stephens, artist on the new and funny comic strip Oh, Brother! (co-created with friend of the blog Bob Weber, Jr.)

Buffy: Joss Whedon has a reaction to news that Buffy The Vampire Slayer is going to be remade without his involvement.

Size: Curt Purcell at The Groovy Age of Horror has a question about the size of an Eric Shanower - Scottie Young graphic novel he wanted to buy but didn’t. And I understand his reasoning.

Theatre: Mark Evanier talks about how Broadway shows make their money back and doesn’t hold out much hope for the new Spider-Man musical to turn a profit.

Publishing: The owners of the James Bond franchise are very smart folks and they’ve seen where the future of publishing is heading. Lee Goldberg is a very smart guy and a talented writer and he agrees with them. And I like to agree with Lee and Bond: The future ain’t in printed books with traditional publishers.

Superman: Writer Lance Mannion finally understands Superman’s origin: the science-deniers on Krypton’s ruling council were Republicans.

Chat: I like this interview with writing partners (Hero Complex) Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman.

King: You can never look at enough Jack Kirby or read enough about his life. Dan Nadel looks at The King for Vice. The link’s all over the interwebs, but if you haven’t seen it yet, do so now.

Pitt: Lots of tributes across the internets to the late Ingrid Pitt, maybe the most famous lesbian vampire on film. This is one of my favorite tributes to her, from Hammer And Beyond.

T-shirts: I want all of these, by Fabian Glez.

DIY: Rod Lott at Bookgasm likes Lila And Ecco’s Do-It-Yourself Comics Club and it sounds like the perfect holiday gift for any kid interested in making their own comics and reading a story about a couple of other kids who are actually doing it.

Pulp: I love looking at these George Rozen covers at Two-Fisted Tales of True-Life Weird Romance. I want them all.

MAD: A very nice interview with cartoonist Al Jaffee.

Yum-Yum: Why does the BBC hate The Goodies?

And finally, Monty Python games are coming to Facebook, which sounds like a much better waste of time than imaginary farming.

Now go forth and use your internets responsibly!
