British Comics: Hagar The Horrible?

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Reviews

Hagar PanelWhen I lived on the East Coast, I knew a lot of old school cartoonists like Jerry Marcus and Orlando Busino. I’d met Mort Walker and his son Brian and Ron Goulart and comics historian Rick Marschall. The cartoonist and their friend Dik Browne, creator of Hagar The Horrible, had long left Connecticut for the warmer pleasures of Florida so I never got to meet him.

But they spoke of him with such awe - of his abilities as a cartoonist and how his irreverent sense of humor was perfect for his chosen profession - that I was really sorry I hadn’t moved to the area much earlier.

By the time Dik Browne created Hagar, he was already a success: he was the co-creator with Mort Walker of Hi & Lois (in 1954), he had a huge side career in advertising (he created the Chiquita logo, for example) and he did strips like The Tracy Twins for Boy’s Life.

And then on his own in 1973, came Hagar The Horrible, the daily comic strip about a goofball Viking leader who wanted nothing more than to pillage villages and celebrate his victories and his defeats with alcohol. It was boisterous, smart, fun, and above all else, extremely well-drawn.

Browne wasn’t some kid learning on the job - he was a working professional at the top of his game. He brought everything he’d learned over the years to his new strip and poured it all into each panel. It wasn’t just funny, it was great to look at.

Britain's Titan Books has recently released The Epic Chronicles of Hagar The Horrible: Dailies 1974-1975, covering the second and third years of the strip and it really is a revelation. Browne played around with strip layout, sometimes using one long panel, worked with light and shadow, spotted blacks beautifully, and even varied his word balloons. And he did all this with Hagar while still drawing Hi & Lois.

Best of all, he made the strip more than just a set-up-then-punchline about a Viking. Hagar the Horrible had a rich supporting cast of family and friends and Browne’s skills managed to turn a sword-wielding, ale-guzzling, ready-to-fight, hardly-a-role-model-husband into a sympathetic character. Chris Browne, Dik’s son, took over the strip after Dik passed away in 1989.

Brian Walker (Mort’s son) contributes an introduction to this volume that describes the family-based creative process of producing Hagar during this period and it sounds like a raucous blast. Brian quotes Dik saying, “We like to show the whole Hagar family during the course of a week, plus other aspects of Hagar’s life - sailing, raiding, eating, partying... there’s no continuity, but different aspects.

The Epic Chronicles is thick with cartoons, reproduced 2-to-a-page in black and white. It’s a nice size for the daily presentation: the cartoons are very readable and it allows for quality reproduction of the artwork. Like all Titan Books products, it’s an excellent package all around and the dustjacket even includes a quote from a fan letter written by Charlton Heston.

Highly recommended.

Comic Book Jobs: British Comics

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials

ToxicToxic, one of the wacky British comics magazines (that competes with Dandy and The Beano) is looking for an "Experienced sub-editor/writer."

What's a sub-editor, you may ask? Well, in the US, it means copy editor, but here it means you'd be the acting assistant editor.

Toxic is published by Egmont, the huge Scandanavian publishing conglom. The mag is for boys aged 7-12, and in addition to articles and such on sports and movies and pop culture, they also feature jokes, comics and competitions. As they say, "anything and everything that’s in a boys life. Especially if it makes him laugh."

Egmont UK is seeking a "creative and experienced person with a proven track record in sub-editing & writing & general." Experience in digital and online "would be an advantage," but above all they want someone "enthusiastic about children’s publishing!"

If you're interested, then you'd better hurry. The listing closes on March 25.

Good luck, job seekers!

British Comics: Scheme Comix #1

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Reviews,Independent

Scheme ComixI like anthology comics. I think they can be a great showcase for both a writer and an artist and if you’re in the mood for a short story instead of a long multi-part epic, they can really hit the spot.

That’s what led me to Scheme Comix, a new indy anthology from Happy World Productions and produced in cooporation with Arts Council Scotland. It’s a pocket-sized 32-page black and white collection of “5 tales of Suspense! Shocks! And Romance!” according to the cover blurb.

All of them are illustrated by Kev Harper, with writing from David Walker, Sharon Irvine and Louise C. Gordon.

Regardless of how long corporate comics survive, I like that there’s a vibrant group of DIY-ers driven to do it themselves, either on the internets or, in this case, print.

I like the variety of stories here: a private eye, space babes, and what looks like the beginning of a wild road trip. That’s right on the money as far as I’m concerned. And artist Kev Harper is definitely someone to watch.

It’s harder, unfortunately, to get a handle on the writers - the stories are short and some of them continue in the next issue. That barely leaves enough room to get the ball rolling before the “To Be Continued” caption pops up.

I think complete-in-one issue stories would be better for the audience and better as a showcase for writers' skills (also better in case of an irregular publishing schedule). But, I’m not the editor and it ain’t my magazine.

I enjoyed Scheme and I wish Kev and his band of merry anthologists the best of luck. I’ll be curious to see where this goes from here.

Here’s a review of Scheme that first lead me to the gang.

British Comics: Commando – The War Watch

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Reviews
CommandoLike many others (and you know who you are), one of my favorite comic book shops is the Dollar Store, known by many different names and operated by several different and separate companies. But whether it's Dollar Tree, 99¢ Only Stores, Family Dollar or whatever, you can still occasionally find someone who's dumped a huge pile of bagged comics from the fringes of the industry.
You might think that no one would want them, but, aha, you'd be wrong. I want them.
I was there just the other day when I found a set of bagged comics, 3-in-a-bag, for $1. Two of the comics were from Amalgam (JLX #1 and Super Soldier #1), the mash-up venture between Marvel and DC back in mid-1990s.
The third was a 2008 reprint of a 2006 issue of Commando (#3951, I had to look it up on the Google), one of the venerable British comics series from DC Thomson.
But the reprint is published by Geddes & Grosset, a UK-based company that prints in India and doesn't have a website.
Curiously, there's no info on where these comics came from. Identifying marks on the bag are non-existent, so who knows where they were before they were bagged together or what clearinghouse did the bagging. All three were in perfect condition, so wherever they were – and the Amalgam ones were in storage for almost 15 years (!) – they were well cared for.
I'd read the Amalgam issues earlier, so I read Commando: The War Watch. It's a simple World War II tale of a family heirloom that dates to the 1800s and gets passed from person-to-person on both sides of the war because of unusual war-related events before it ends up, well, you can see where this is going. The ending will be no surprise to anyone who's read a dozen or so Robert Kanigher 1960s war stories from DC Comics, but for the intended audience, it's a fine story well told.
Although I can't get used to the typeset word balloons, the artwork is nice and clean. It's about on a par with a Gold Key comic from the 1960s, and I mean that in a good way. The storytelling is easy to follow and the battlefield scenes aren't in your face violent. The black and white printing adds to "The Good War" effect. This isn't a Saving Private Ryan view of war, more like an Audie Murphy one.
It would've been nice to see the writer and artist credited in the reprint, but Commando only recently started crediting its creators and the original printing of this issue didn't have them listed. That's a shame because I think there's no benefit to anyone in keeping credits a secret and I always like to know who's writing and drawing what I'm reading.
Commando's original format is digest-sized, with just two-three panels per page. This reprint version was clearly altered to fit the standard comic book size with headers and footers added to each page to compensate for the original's stubby-shaped artwork. It's not terribly distracting and as someone who's had to do that in the past, I appreciate the reasons for it.
Next time I'm at the Dollar Store, I'll be looking for subsequent issues. At 33¢ (US) for a 60+ page war comic, it's the bargain of the year. Now if only they'd do this with Judge Dredd…or The Beano…or…
