The Mighty Thor #3 Review

"> June 23, 2011 Marvel Comments Off Tweet

Silver Surfer has come for the Worldheart and plans to take it to his lord, Galactus.  If that’s not bad enough, poor Volstagg has run afoul in Broxton.

The Mighty Thor #3

Volstagg awakes excited for today, he’s going to work at Bill’s Diner to make the most glorious breakfast he can for the townspeople of Broxton.  Unfortunately, he comes across an angry mob of Christians led by the town’s reverend who’s ready to deliver a message to Asgard – they are no longer wanted in Broxton.  In Asgard, Surfer and Thor are playing out their own version of Clash of the Titans.  Odin stops them and brings things back under control.  Surfer gives the reason why he wants the Worldheart for Galactus.  He’s under the impression that taking the seed to Galactus would satiate the world devourer’s hunger forever.  Odin sends Surfer back to his master with nothing.  As Volstagg calls for war against Broxton, the Asgardians prepare to do battle with Galactus.  First, however, Thor stops by Sif’s chambers to show off his brand new armor…  But, don’t worry, with a naked Sif in front of him, he does what so many men would do – tells her he doesn’t have to leave quite yet.

What I really like about this series from Matt Fraction is that it has a personality.  For as much as I love Thor, I admit it’s easy for him to lose any semblance of a personality in his series.  For all those great battles he’s fought in, it’s normally played out the same way each time.  Thor’s the cock of the walk in Asgard, some guy with a lot of power shows up, there’s a skirmish that bloodies Thor, and they trade egos until a big battle comes about.  That’s a lot of Thor’s stories.  Even during the great Walk Simonson’s era on the book in the 1980s, this was the typical formula.  Even though Fraction follows the paces for the story, there’s a lot more personality in the characters.  Characters have funny oneliners.  Even Odin has some good ones and he’s never one I ever thought of as a funny guy.  I LOVED Volstagg’s reaction to the reverend proclaiming Jesus has risen.  It’s no big deal to him and why should it be?  He’s seen so many die and return that this young feller Jesus isn’t anything new.  The dialog in this series has been sharp and fun.  Oh…  And I cannot think of a time in such a short time (of three issues) that Thor’s been laid so often.  With the characters possessing such personality, the whole book has a personality fitting for the fans of Thor, especially the older, more mature crowd.

Gosh…  What can I say about Olivier Coipel?  The majority of this book is laid out in a multitude of frames on double pages.  It’s the type of stuff that came into popularity during the Silver Age with Jack Kirby telling stories in a visual style not often seen.  Coipel’s visuals are paced so well that the whole battle between Silver Surfer and Thor was so action packed and exciting that I could have watched this play out for another 30 pages.  If that was exciting, the scene in which Loki was looking to swipe a lock of Sif’s hair while she slept was actually pretty tense for a lighthearted sequence.  It too played out in the multiple frames spread out over a two-page format and unlike the high action of level ten fisticuffs, this was paced well but slightly different to set a different tone for the scene.  As good as Coipel always is, this may be one of his finest single issues ever.

As good as this was, look out for next month when the Asgardians take the fight directly to Galactus!
