Gotham City Sirens #23 Review

Tagged with: Catwoman  Gotham City Sirens  Harley Quinn  JokerGotham City Sirens #23

I have, on occasion of late, complained about the games the comics companies are playing with the titles of the issues. It seems to be more and more of a trend to save the title for the last page as some big dramatic reveal. In Gotham City Sirens this week, they got cute in a different way, and I’m really not sure if the title of this issue is “Friends” or “X Friends.”

Either way, Peter Calloway is still writing the book in the apparent perpetual absence of Paul “No, I’ll be back, really” Dini. While this is listed as part one of a new arc, it begins exactly where last issue ended: Harley has gone from “Kill the Joker” to “Oh, my darlin’ puddin’” once again, as predicted. She and “Mistah J” are leading a riot among the Arkham prisoners, while Ivy is on her way to help Harley, and Catwoman has said she’s done with them.

Much of the issue is “inmates kill guards,” “Joker is crazy,” and “Catwoman feels guilty.” As an interesting subplot, the most recent Black Mask (Jeremiah Arkham, former director here) is actually opposing the Joker’s “Game Night” with the guards, wanting to use them as bargaining chips. Rather unrealistically, there’s a rather odd scene of Joker taking off his prison clothing to show he’s wearing his trademark purple suit under it. We also learn that current-about-to-be-former Director Alice Sinner (really, who came up with THAT name?) is in league with Black Mask, they seem to be lovers. As another aside, at this point, how in the world do they get new directors of Arkham Asylum? You either get killed, go crazy, or are revealed to be in league with someone inside.

For the ending, Catwoman gives into conscience and races to help Harley, the security director has been communicating with Jim Gordon about how to handle this, and Black Mask and Joker face off over the guards’ lives. This is interrupted when Ivy finally arrives and immobilizes everyone with vines, telling Harley to choose right now, once and for all: her unhealthy relationship with Joker, or her friendship with Ivy. Meanwhile, outside, Batman and Catwoman agree to work together to resolve the situation at Arkham and spring dramatically into action.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

Both Batmen show up in this issue, which at the very least is a nice nod to current Gotham continuity. The Dick/Selena scene is minor, just another stirring of her conscience. The characters introduced in Harley’s well-done break in are all still inside, so they are staying consistent with their own stories here, also good.

Catwoman seems to be really out of place with her two friends (or ex-friends depending on how you read that title). She has morals, and a conscience, and doesn’t kill casually or for entertainment. I’ve enjoyed the book, but always found the initial premise of these three working together a bit flawed, and that seems to be coming to a head here. I said before that we all knew Harley wasn’t going to kill the Joker, the story would be about why not, and they took the disappointing and easy route on that. Now for cliffhangers, we’re supposed to believe, even for a moment, that Harley will choose Ivy over Joker? It’s not going to happen, and if it does, it’s going to be massively out of character. As I’ve said before, this book has been flailing around since Dini left, and I really don’t see how the three are going to get back together after this go around. I’ve heard rumors of late about another wave of cancellations, and Sirens has been mentioned (along with Batgirl, Secret Six, and Zatanna, so basically all female lead books that I enjoy). I’d mourn those others passing, but at this point, much as I hate to say it, I might consider Sirens going away as a mercy killing.

I agree with the “mercy killing” thing. It always bothered me when publishers seemingly give up on a title, but still crank out mediocre garbage and ask fans to buy it. If the company publishing the book can’t get behind it and make it something worth reading, it’s only a matter of time before the fans give up on it.

Nice review, I agree with just about all your points. When I was waiting for the “big title reveal” I actually read the title as “Ends” which helped solidify in my mind that this book is heading for the chopping block and this is the final arc.

Gotham City Sirens #22 Review

Tagged with: Catwoman  Gotham City Sirens  Judgement on Gotham  Peter CallowayGotham City Sirens #22

The “Judgment on Gotham” crossover that goes through various Bat-books this month continues here in Gotham City Sirens. Aside from a brief mention of them, neither Harley nor Ivy have the slightest of appearances here, making it a Catwoman tale, guest starring Batman and Red Robin. The story is written by Peter Calloway. I can’t say he’s the regular writer here, as the title doesn’t seem to have one, but he’s the current one.

For those not following this crossover, the newest Azreal seems to have flipped out, joining forces with a powerful psionic calling himself the Crusader. They have decided to make Batman (Grayson flavor), Red Robin, and Catwoman undergo “tests” of their moral character. If they fail these tests, the Crusader will use the powerful superhuman Fireball to destroy Gotham. Apparently because there wasn’t enough crazy to go around, Az and Crusader are joined by Catwoman’s sister Maggie, dressed as a nun again, but now not displaying the powers and/or “angelic” familiar she had last time I saw her. Red Robin did everything he was supposed to in his test, but they decided he failed because he didn’t profess a belief in God. Selina’s test is a good measure of the nuttiness going ‘round here. To prove she’s a good person, she’s supposed to sacrifice her sister to God. Literally. With a knife. Catwoman, naturally enough, refuses. We see a few scenes of the puppet master pulling the strings here- Ra’s Al Ghul, who certainly seems to be turning up a lot lately. With Selina failing, will Gotham be saved? I’d bet yes, but the story concludes in Batman 709 if you care to see for yourself.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

This is a good characterization of Selina. She does what she thinks is best, ignores the orders of both Batman and Crazy Crusader and Company. Her love for her sister Maggie is clear, as is her revulsion at this perversion of faith. Lots of good Catwoman in action, with some decent showings by Red Robin and Batman as well.

If you only collect Sirens, and not the other Bat-books, this is a bit confusing. It’s a not really well-billed crossover, no mention of it at all on the cover. I’m also rather curious about Maggie’s angelic looking genie she had last time. Where’d it go? And, of course, this is supposed to be Gotham City Sirens, not Catwoman and her Bat-tastic friends. Eh, it was a mediocore issue of a crossover where the storyline didn’t really work. I won’t spoil the other issues, but I’ve read them all and I can’t say I’m impressed. Also, given recent events and the somewhat fragile premise in the first place, I’m not really sure I see the characters getting back together. I know many have been calling for the cancellation of this book. It could be this is the beginning of the end, especially with all the changes in the DCU (and the publishing line) coming from Flashpoint.

And did we really need another crazy Azreal? Is it part of the job description?

Gotham City Sirens #21 Review

Tagged with: Arkham Asylum  Catwoman  Gotham City Sirens  Harley Quinn  JokerGotham City Sirens #21

Peter Calloway continues his Harley-centric story in Gotham City Sirens 21, “Hell Hath No Fury.” Harley has been infiltrating Arkham, using carefully selected items that are a major part of the various psychological flaws of the inmates and staff. When we last saw her, Harley was confronting the head of security, with a rusty nail as her piece for him. Calloway did a great job in this arc of remembering that Harley started off as a psychiatrist, and was a very good one, as well as being former staff here.

We gradually learn that Aaron Cash, the security chief, lost his son years ago. Harley tells him that the source of the tetanus that killed the boy was from a nail that scratched him when no one saw, wielded by the Joker himself as petty vengeance for some slight or other. Tetanus, the doctor tells the grieving Cash, makes the victim’s muscles tense and display a grin. Again they use the clever bit of the item’s shape being the frame for the art in the key part of the story. Aaron goes from refusing to let Harley free him, to shocked and almost pleased when he learns she’s there to kill him. Cash, heartbroken after Harley’s revelations, stands aside and even gives her keys and his gun.

There are various scenes of Ivy and Catwoman outside, plotting how to break in and bickering. After seeing many police cars rushing off to Devil’s Square, her old neighborhood, Catwoman runs off, leaving Ivy to aid Harley, or not, on her own, after they exchange ominous good-byes. As Harley finally gets to the Joker’s cell, there’s a multi-page series of various flashbacks of their time together, executed with some really odd looking art.

I was saying from when I first heard about this story, that there are ceratin parameters you know going in. It’s a given that Harley is not actually going to kill Joker. He’s too big a character, and I suspect he’ll be around as along as there’s a Batman. So, the trick here will be showing why Harley doesn’t succeed, and what happens along the way. In this, I feel we were let down, as Joker tells her he missed her, and she tosses aside the gun to leap into his arms.

The weak point of this title has always been why Catwoman, who’s more of a grey/neutral character, was with these two killers. There have been various strains in the relationships along the way, starting from the first arc where Ivy and Harley held Selina captive to try and force the Batman’s name from her. It seems they keep drifting farther apart, despite the odd moments of suddenly rallying around each other for no real discernable reason. Catwoman has helped save Ivy at least twice in this title I can think of, and there’s no real reason for Ivy’s continued disdain of her.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

As I said last issue, it was nice seeing Harley given credit for being something besides a goofy clown girl. She’s highly intelligent, however hard she works to hide it, and was very good at her job. Calloway seems to have a good grasp on who she is and what makes her tick.

Three is a hard number to juggle, and this is apparently no exception. Harley is center stage, and the others don’t really do a lot. The non-stop bickering between Ivy and Selina is getting old, and their big build up to that “good bye” feels rather meaningless. Unless they’ve kept the book’s cancellation a secret, a near impossibility these days, we know they will reunite eventually, likely next issue to save Harley from the Joker. Again. Which brings me to my other big let down this issue. Of all the twists and turns they could have done here, it’s just the same old Harley can’t resist the Joker? There could have been a great story here, and I felt there was, right up to that point. Maybe they’ll really surprise me next issue, but I confess to disappointment in this so far.

Catwoman’s old neighbourhood is the East End, not Devil’s Square. Devil’s Square is where all the action in Batman #708 takes place, so I’d say this issue leads directly into that one, which kicks off the Batman/Sirens/Red Robin crossover.

Calloway does not understand the character of Selina or her relationship with Bruce, which was made obvious two issues ago when he tried to put a knife in their relationship. At least Dini and Morrison are continuing to write them romantically in their books. DC, please cancel Sirens or at least remove Selina from it—she deserves better!

Gotham City Sirens # 17 Review

Selina poses, which is about all they let her do in this...Gotham City Sirens #17 ReviewThe game of writer’s roulette continues in Gotham City Sirens 17, with part two of three in a story by Peter Calloway. Catwoman has been kidnapped to try and pry the secret of Batman’s identity from her mind. Her team mates are working with two of the many women in Bruce’s life- Talia and Zatanna- to get Catwoman back. To complicate matters, Harley and Ivy do not know Batman’s secret, but think they do. Harley and Ivy are aware the other two are hiding something, leading to this wonderful exchange- Harley: What do you know that we don’t? Talia: Oh, Harley.. What you don’t know staggers the imagination. If I was to start talking right now, we’d all die of old age before I finished.” With this kind of teamwork (?) they continue looking for Selina, who spends most of the issue out cold in dreams that are being manipulated to get the information the others want.

An old Nightwing foe, Shrike, shows up to fight the team, and is somehow or other “protected” from Zatanna’s spells. He reveals all this is about Batman’s secret, angering Harley at the least. Ivy and Zee stay to deal with Shrike (serious overkill for a non-powered foe who is skilled, but nowhere near Batman level) as Harley and Talia go on to find Catwoman. The villain is revealed as a man called Sempai, a former student of the highly skilled martial artist known as Sensei (both words mean teacher, simply at different ranks). Shrike and Sempai both get away, leaving Catwoman behind. Talia and Zatanna talk about what’s happened, and Talia comments that Selina knowing is just too dangerous as she’s “so easy to capture” and they should “wipe Bruce from Selina’s mind.”

What I liked and what I didn’t:

I always like seeing Zatanna (her monthly is a great read, strongly recommended). Shrike is an interesting choice of villain, nice bit of trivia for Bat-family fans. And it’s nice to see that despite their differences, Zee and Talia will work together for a man they care about. Some of the dialogue, like what I quoted above, was very well done.

Catwoman should NOT be “easy to capture,” as was referenced here. She is not given enough credit in this book in general, and certainly not in this story. There has been a lot of talk among Catwoman fans of late that she deserves better than what she gets in this book. Based on this arc and the one before, I agree. I also can’t really get worked up about them “erasing” Bruce from Selina’s mind since over in Batman Inc, Bruce is back and they are together. I find it hard to believe Shrike can be protected from Zatanna’s spells, and that he managed to escape from both Ivy and Zee. I think this book is still suffering from Dini’s absence, and if he doesn’t come back soon, he might not have a book to come back TO.
