Supergirl #64 Review

Tagged with: James Peaty  SupergirlSupergirl #64“. . . . seems such a long time ago.”  So opens Supergirl #64, for which I am reviewing.  And yes, it does seem like a long time ago that we were beginning this storyline titled “Good Looking Corpse.”  Supergirl is all but defeated, and Robin, Blue Beetle and Miss Martian are still under Dubbilex’s control, but we, as long time comic book readers, know that she won’t be vanquished.

Dubbilex is finally shown how weak-willed he is, as it’s revealed that he never had Miss Martian under his control after all.  She was playing “telepathic double-agent,” if you will.  In a flashback scene, she is shown telepathically communicating to Supergirl, while Robin is undergoing mental torture.  In the end, Miss Martian is the brains, and Supergirl is the brawn in the fight to defeat Dubbilex.

Lois Lane and Supergirl have some girl time at the end, the former venting her frustration regarding the fact that the story about Cadmus isn’t going to be published.  Alex/Dubbilex’s control over Catherine ended when Dubbilex was defeated, as well.

As far as the book is concerned, it needs some consistency, and a regular development team can do the trick.  The book has held up pretty well considering it’s been handed off from team to team like an unwanted child.  The book also needs to reference other events in the DC Universe, especially Supergirl’s current stint in the Justice League, so that it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle, considering that we are on the heals of a major DC event (Flashpoint).  The next issue brings Kelly Sue DeConnick and ChrisCross as the writer and artist, respectively.  She’s wrote “Osborne” for Marvel, which I enjoyed, so this should be interesting.

Stay on this website for my review of Supergirl #65 next month.

Supergirl #63 Review

Tagged with: Supergirl  SupermanSupergirl #63Much like Supergirl herself, the plot of “Good-Looking Corpse” crashes head first.  I wish Nick Spencer would have been able to finish this story, instead of prematurely handing the reins over to Peaty.  There’s no disrespect meant for Peaty, I just wanted to see Spencer’s interlude play itself out, and then have Peaty take over full time.  The title has remained consistent through all the writer changes over the last five years or so.

In any event, Blue Beetle, Miss Martian, and Damian are held prisoner, while Supergirl is shown going headfirst into solving the mystery her own way.  Initially, she doesn’t let her companions in on what she is doing.  The reason for her going solo is revealed soon enough.  Her “companions” turn out to be robot thugs belonging to Alex, who turns out to be none other than the villain Dubbilex.

The brilliant art and coloring made me stop and smell the roses.  The writing of late has been fast paced.  I whipped through this issue in only a few minutes, but I went back through the art and noticed details I hadn’t noticed the first time through.

“Good-Looking Corpse” concludes next month.
