Teen Titans #95 Review

Tagged with: JT Krul  Solistice  Superboy  Teen TitansTeen Titans #95

JT Krul shows us “How the Mighty Fall” in Teen Titans 95. Wonder Girl, her mom, Ravager, Red Robin, and Solstice’s parents have all been captured, and Kid Flash adds himself to the list by disobeying Red Robin’s instructions and trying to free them instead of scouting and returning. Beast Boy and Solstice chat a bit about their powers, and Raven, well… sulks. She doesn’t like this world, doesn’t like Solstice, and is acting like a the teen she looks like, rather than the much more mature hero she’s been. Superboy gets lured off and captured by a demon, helped by the fake Ravager, who turns on him. Raven gets taken in this exchange as well, leaving Solstice and Beast Boy to (presumably) free the others and defeat the various gods and demons arrayed against them.

This is an odd little story, and I’m not sure where it’s going. The really obvious choice is for Solstice to be hero of the piece, both because the myths here are from her culture and because it would be showcasing the newest team member to show their worth. I’m really hoping Krul doesn’t do that, if for no other reason than it’s been done too many times. I guess that would leave Beast Boy (who really should go back to Changeling) as the hero, which I’d love. The character rarely gets respect, and he’s the most experienced member of this team. I guess we’ll see.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

The foes are definitely powerful here, and the team needs to pull together. Krul is showing reasonably well that they are not really a team at present, more a collection of individuals who happen to be on the same side. Let’s hope that changes soon.

I am finding the “Oh, my powers are based on darkness, and this new girl Solstice is powered by light, so I don’t like her” bit from Raven to be trite and irksome. Starfire’s arguably light powered, and Raven never acted like this around her. The “ten little Indians” game as the team gets picked off one by one is a bit odd as well, they should be better than this.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsCons some nice screen time for Gar and Solstice, Kid Flash realizing he screwed up, even if too late the Raven/Solstice bit, the slow whittling down of the team Rating70% You might also like...Teen Titans #94 Review

Titans #35 Review

Tagged with: Eric Wallace  Fabrizio Fiorentino  Teen Titans  TitansTitans #35

The train wreck that is the continuing all villainous Titans title continues with yet another chapter of the team vs Drago the all seeing blind man. Drago uses his telepathy (at least it seems to be telepathy) on Cheshire as they fight, and he once again bests her easily, and then continues to try and recruit her. Once again, he plays on her guilt about Lian, and once again, any mention of her son, Thomas, is wholly lacking. I can only assume at this point Wallace has not done his homework on the character, and that DC’s notional editors are still out on the coffee break they seem to have taken a few years ago.

Slade is sent to the caverns, where the scientists working for Drago send their genetic mistakes. As he’s escorted down there, Slade is filled in on more of Drago’s back story, specifically how he survived their last meeting, when Slade left him for dead. Roy engineers a break from his cell by using part of his cybernetic arm to free Cinder. Hey, they remembered Cinder’s on the team, after no mention of her at all last issue.

The story is cut with scenes of Tattooed Man back in Liberty Hill, his home, dealing with what I am presuming is the fallout from his miniseries. I didn’t read it, so I don’t really know what’s happening here, but it seems he organized some of the local thugs into a police force themselves to clean up the area, and, while he’s been gone, they’ve gone bad, or worse. This has, for some reason, attracted Vixen’s attention, and they bicker a bit before starting to square off for a fight that will be shown next issue. There’s also a bit about Osiris and Isis in Khandaq, and what seems to be a threatening war with neighbor Quarac. Didn’t Quarac get nuked several years ago, by none other than Titans’ bad girl Cheshire? And wasn’t THAT after Rick Flag nuked part of the place in Suicide Squad? Must have a heck of a nuclear clean up program there.

So, we leave with the blinded Slade fighting hordes of genetic mistakes, while Roy and Cinder go to free him and Cheshire, as Vixen and Tattooed Man prepare to fight.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

I’m being generous and presuming Wallace is following up on the Ink miniseries (which he likely is as it seems he wrote that one). The story in Liberty Hill sounds like it could be interesting, and is getting me curious about the mini. And hey, Roy actually made it through an issue (granted he was only on a few pages) without mentioning being a junkie. Progress, maybe.

What is it with the Wilson family and eyes? Slade’s been missing one since he first appeared, Ravager lost one soon after she took up the name, Jericho lost both in Deathtrap (then regrew them somehow off screen which was never explained), and now Slade’s lost his other one. Drago’s routine as the enlightened blind man has been done before, and really isn’t grabbing me this time out. Cinder seems to be just a sociopath with no real qualms about hurting anyone at any time. Cheshire’s self destructive streak I don’t buy, and for God’s sake, will SOMEONE tell Eric Wallace she had a son, too? I’m also not sure why you’d capture someone like Roy, a known former government agent, hero, and weapons master, and leave his very obvious fake arm on him. Also, just kinda curious, Isis had been de-petrified, and the team’s headquarters left partially in ruin behind them… so what happened to Black Adam and his statue-like state?

I keep getting this book because it has several characters I’ve really liked in the past. But really, Deathstroke seems almost boring (that’s a feat), Roy is pathetic in his current incarnation, and Osiris has gone to the dark side. Cheshire was a good villain, but now even she seems to have lost her edge. I think, come the end of this arc, unless they really impress me, I may be dropping this one.

Teen Titans #94 Review

Tagged with: JT Krul  Kid Flash  Superboy  Teen TitansTeen Titans #94

JT Krul tells us of “The Power of Myth,” in Teen Titans #94, continuing Solstice’s less than auspicious debut on the team, although it’s really not her fault. While she tells most of the team about the mythical story of epic Ramayana, Wonder Girl fights some of the characters from that story, and loses badly. Monsters 1, Titans O for those keeping score. Mostly through Red Robin’s efforts and knowledge, the team gets into the same mystic world this fight was in, and starts searching for Cassie. Superboy can’t find her with his senses, and Red Robin vetoes Kid-Flash speeding off to find her, wanting to keep everyone together. This lasts until the first fight, when Raven can’t stand being around Solstice’s light powers anymore and runs off. Everyone scatters, Gar naturally going after Raven, and Ravager and Red Robin both get captured. One of the creatures shifts into Ravager’s form, and leads the team off to what is likely some form of trap or ambush, after Raven makes some snarky comment to Beast Boy about leaving her alone as he’s “so good at it these days.” The issue ends with the big blue baddie, Rankor apparently, scheming to wreak havoc everywhere, sitting on his throne above his prisoners. Final score, Monsters 3, Titans 0 as we wait to be continued.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

There were some good moments here, like Beast Boy taking charge as the leaders go missing. He is about the most experienced one here, with the debatable exception of the then-missing Red Robin. The team still largely feels like close friends, as they should, with an annoying sister or something, played by Ravager.

Raven having major problems with Solstice’s powers seems almost contrived, and clearly sets up for future drama (like we need more of that). To coin a phrase, the team isn’t big enough for both of them. Raven’s snapping at Gar was really uncalled for. They’ve made such a mess of that relationship that I’ve lost track of who broke up with who most recently, but he’s never gone out of his way to ignore her certainly.

All in all, this wasn’t a bad issue, but I think Krul is slipping a bit. Between Tim questioning his leadership (is this an epidemic? Dick’s doing the same in JLA), Raven’s snapping, and the Raven/Solstice imbalance, there are just too many odd little soap operatic developments. I’m hoping this one wraps up soon.

Titans #34 Review

Tagged with: Deathstroke  Eric Wallace  Isis  TitansTitans #34

The current run of Titans has some interesting recurring themes, when you think about it. The name itself, usually used for heroes, now for this band of murderers and mercenaries. Then you have Roy Harper, a former hero fallen very much to the dark side. Osiris was a hero, too, and is now obsessed with restoring his lost family to the point he’s killing people to do it. Isis seems to be back, and either her power has gone wrong, or she’s the way she was just before the Wizard Shazam de-powered her and turned her to stone– a killer. Deathstroke himself has wavered over the years from villain to pretty much outright hero during Titans Hunt to anti-hero in his own book, and is now back to bad guy. So the running thread seems to be corruption in many forms. Add in Ink, who was nearly a hero during Infinite Crisis, and then lost it, and Cinder, who seems to be a child abuse victim, and I think I may be on to something here.

In Broken Promises part 2, Divided We Fall, Eric Wallace furthers this theme. The issue mostly jumps around between the fortress/mansion of Drago, last issue’s bad guy, and Philadelphia. In Drago’s mansion, most of the team has been captured, and are awaiting surgery to make them like he is, blind but prophetic. Slade’s already lost his one remaining eye to this insanity. Slade and Roy are locked in adjoining cells, and Slade relates Drago’s history- he and Slade were soldiers together back early in both of their careers. Roy also learns that whatever he’s taking, it’s not heroin, it’s worse, and Slade’s been doctoring his stash. Cheshire gets her own surprise, when Drago announces he wants an heir, so he needs a wife. Well, she’s had two kids already that we know of, so I guess she’s not a horrid choice.

In Philadelphia, Isis rages, her powers destroying much of the city, as Osiris tries, and fails, to calm her. It seems he brought her back corrupt since he powered her resurrection with murder and death. Isis finally gets some degree of control back over herself, and asks Osiris to kill her. When he refuses, she flies high and prays to Anubis (the god, not another brother as far as I know) to save the people with her death. Her prayer is answered with a Shazam-style lightning bolt, which Osiris races to intercept, and they both recover, Isis saying the dark presence she felt was gone. What she thinks, but doesn’t say, is that she can still sense darkness in Osiris, and he scares her. There’s also a brief interlude with Ray Palmer bringing his investigation to Batman Dick Grayson, who regrets abandoning Roy now, claiming they are family (oddly, his flashback image of the original Teen Titans is missing Aqualad- he’s not part of the family?).

What I liked and what I didn’t:

Isis being cured or cleansed or whatever was good. It’s about time SOMETHING good happened to any of the Marvel family. It’s also kind of nice to finally have Roy’s drug addressed. Not his habit, the drug itself- I’ve been saying for months that he couldn’t function like this on heroin.

I continue to not like this art, it’s muddy, unclear, and very odd choices on the borders (there’s one panel of Osiris flying along, and for no real reason, the edge of the panel runs down his face. It doesn’t look like an artistic choice, although it may be, it looks like a flat out mistake). Anubis apparently answering Isis’ prayer is all well and good, but why is the ancient Egpytian god using magic lightning like Shazam? It seems a strange choice. Ray bringing in some allies finally makes sense, and is long overdue, but why is he going to Dick? Ray and Bruce were team mates for years, and aside from big crowd scenes, I’m not sure the two have ever really met. I also think the pace on this subplot is really dragging. Also, what happened to Cinder? She was captured with the others, and neither seen nor mentioned in this issue. And Drago is yet another person Slade screwed over. I’m surprised anyone has anything whatever to do with the man.

I’m guessing what’s going to happen here is that the fragments of the team are going to be forced to work together to beat Drago, at least the Slade/Roy/Jade bit. I also rather wonder if the “darkness” Isis is talking about is the evil opposite number of Shazam from the JSA arc a while back. In that story, we saw the Rock of Finality (mirroring Shazam’s Rock of Eternity), and a powerful figure behind the scenes who really seemed like a bad guy. She’s purged of it now, but it seems to be in Amon/Osiris, and I bet we’ll see it in Black Adam if he’s ever de-petrified or whatever the word is.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsCons Isis’ purging where’s Cinder, the magic lightning, the art Rating60%
