Iron Man/Thor #2 Review

Tagged with: Iron Man  Iron Man/Thor  ThorIron Man/Thor #2

In Iron Man/Thor #2, the High Evolutionary is out stealing stuff from Asgard and looking for Tony Stark.  What the High Evolutionary is doing is truly, well, evolutionary.

High Evolutionary has recruited Ulik the troll and the magical alchemist Diablo to grab the Destroyer armor from the shattered remains of Asgard.  Ulik’s strength has been boosted and Diablo has a new bag of tricks that turns Thor’s own lightning against the God of Thunder.  The odd couple make off with the armor leaving Thor with the mystery of where they could have gone.  Meanwhile, after being overpowered by a bigger, stronger Crimson Dynamo, Tony Stark is taken to a heavenly place to have a chat with the High Evolutionary.  Here the Evolutionary explains what he’s up to…  With the help of his “New Men”, animals turned into humanoid slaves, High Evolutionary is looking to build a brand new, technologically based god for the 21st century.  What does he want with Stark?  What else, he’s looking to make Iron Man the vessel for this new god.

As of right now, this mini-series contains two separate stories on a crash course with one another.  The first is Thor defending, losing, and searching for the Destroyer armor.  The second is Tony Stark learning what the heck is going on with the stronger Crimson Dynamo and, as he learns in a very civilized conversation with the High Evolutionary, what the bigger picture is that drives the story.  These two stories actually create a very good mix of technology, mythology, and theology, and classic role reversal.

Thor, in a story that is more like a good old fashioned mystery, is left searching for clues about Diablo’s destination, to which he called the Hermetica.  He takes a dragon who’s skilled in tracking and ends up at the Smithsonian.  Now you have a warrior with one of the greatest weapons ever created in a place as delicate as the Smithsonian.  Talk about your ultimate bull in a china shop situation.  In the end, Thor is left having to put the pieces together that the High Evolutionary’s Hermetica is hidden inside an ancient book written by 9th/10th century alchemist Esteban Corazon de Ablo…  Get it…  DE…  ABLO?  What makes this so interesting is that you normally think of Thor as the bruiser and here he is having to use his brain and some cunning.

Stark, on the other hand, is right in the middle of very classic comic book villainy.  The High Evolutionary is a throwback to one a time when comics were big, bombastic, over the top stories.  Back in his day, villains didn’t sit and wait for the moment to kill the Skrull Queen knowing it would make them the most trusted and powerful people in the world.  These guys made big arrivals and flat out told you, “Hey!  I’m gonna really do something bad!  AND I’m going to do it in a really crazy way!”  The High Evolutionary’s plans include making slaves out of animals turned into humanoid “people”, giving a very odd mix of villains some super duper powers, planning to do away with those people/animals without a single thought or care about eliminating them when he gets what he wants, and, oh yeah, create a brand new god.  He’s kinda not messing around.  Like in a classic comic book villain kind of way.

You might think that the Iron Man side of the story is the weaker of the two, but it really isn’t.  Stark is talking god stuff, something he puts very little value in anyway, while also talking, and using, technology.  It’s not Thor talking god stuff either, so the other role reversal is finding Stark in the discussion of gods, not the actual god in the story.

So, all in all, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning have crafted a nice little comic book story that has some very complex ideas and execution.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsNice use of the characters in the story and really nice art from Scot Eaton. Not many, but there's still a little bit of a concern that the story may fizzle by issue four. We've come a long way in just two issues. Rating90%

Adventure Comics #521 Review

Tagged with: Adventure Comics  Green Lantern  Legion of Super Heroes  Paul LevitzAdventure Comics is not a title I often review, but 521 this week carries over from Legion of Super Heroes, which is one the ones I cover. In this issue, we finally see who is the Legionnaire Green Lantern, and most of the guesses on the boards and among comic fans I know were wrong. The Dyogene, some sort of creature acting as herald for the formation of a new Green Lantern Corps, is hovering just outside Legion HQ, being confronted by Earth-Man and Shadow Lass, my new least favorite couple in the LSH. As they race after it when it enters the building, we cut to:

Africa, where a recent major earthquake has caused a lot of damage and Sun Boy, Invisible Kid II, Tellus, and Element Lad try to save the victims and repair some of the damage. Element Lad pulls of some very impressive transformations in terms of sheer scale, which leave him sweating but still helping out- surrounding a burning building with xenon to snuff the flames, switching it back to oxygen before anyone inside can die, and reinforcing an old stone building with interon are among his tricks here.

While Cosmic Boy deals with Dyogene directing that all Legionnaires present be assembled in one room, Dawnstar and Wildfire investigate the source of the quake, and track it into space after finding victims who apparently died of fright. Dyogene scans the room of heroes, and selects Mon-El, who becomes the second dual Green Lantern/Daxamite. Talk about a lot of power in one place. Dyogene has been warning of some danger coming, and says this will help defeat it.

In space, Dawny and Wildfire get blasted by whatever they are following, and it is powerful enough to knock them both out of the chase from over a light-minute away (186,000 x 60 miles). His suit automatically summons help for them. Back on Earth, Mon-el parts ways with Shady, who we finally learn broke up with him because he “never came back to being a couple after that last stay in the Phantom Zone,” whatever that means. Mon and Dyogene fly off to confront whatever danger it is talking about, likely whatever blasted Dawny and Wildfire.

The other story is the midst of an Atom tale, about him fighting a secret organization that his uncle was once part of. Ray and his uncle talk about their family and their past as Ray improvises repairs to his belt to get them out of the shrunken world they’re in at the moment. They make it back to full size and go back to fighting the evil scientists of “the Colony” who want Ray’s dwarf star matter to duplicate his size belt for themselves. They don’t manage to escape, partially because Uncle Dave doesn’t want to leave behind his work. When they are caught, Ray is told to give up the dwarf star or they will kill his comatose father. This will be continued in a special in March.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

For the Legion story, it was nice to see some of the members who have been largely absent from the new book, like Tellus and Element Lad. I’ve also been a long time fan of Wildfire and Dawnstar, so it’s nice to see them still together. And we finally have a resolution as to who is going to be the LSH GL, so it’s nice to see that dealt with.

For the Atom, I like the stories that showcase Ray’s smarts, it’s what sets him apart from many other heroes. His uncle commenting on Ray being as brilliant as he is but still caring about people is nice as well.

What I didn’t like was Mon getting the ring, it just seems like too much power, plus duplicating the earlier Sodom Yat story. I also still really don’t like the Mon-El/Shady break up, or the Shady/Earth-Man pairing.

In the Atom story, I’m mostly confused by what seem to be several retcons that seem to be creeping into Ray’s story. For the longest time, he was the only one who could use his belt without causing an explosion after a few minutes. It was even referenced in a JLA story a few years ago. Since then, more and more people are using his gear without issue, including the Atom that was with the Suicide Squad, Jean Loring, and the most recent Atom Ryan Choi. Further, in this story, Ray complains that his uncle gave away his secret ID to the Colony. Ray himself wrote an autobiography revealing his secret ID years ago during his “Sword of the Atom” phase. I wish they’d tell us when they are retconning things, it really is unclear as to whether this is a retcon or a writer error.

Secret Six #28 Review

Tagged with: Catman  Deadshot  Gail Simone  Secret SixThe Secret Six’s time in Skataris concludes with The Reptile Brain Part Four: The Skull Just Beneath The Flesh. The first few pages are a flashback of a very young Black Alice with her family, asking about war and such things. Back to the present, Alice is trying to use a sword in the battle raging around her, as her powers aren’t working here. Deadshot sees her about to get killed and steps in to save her, but burns off the last of his ammunition to do it. Now we have a magic thief who can’t steal magic and a marksman with empty guns. Not a great day for the Six. Deadshot sends her off to find bows, crossbows, anything that fires.

Alice flees through the fight, evading enemies, former team mates, and chaos in general. Back in the throne room, Machiste has allowed himself to be possessed by the mad god-like being Demios, who apparently killed the Warlord sometime back. Bane and Scandal make up after their last near-fatal meeting, Alice brings bows to Deadshot, and the Demios as giant snake makes most of the rest of the fight irrelevant. Bane wisely calls a retreat, and Alice stands up to him, demanding they defeat this evil now, as it is their fault, likening the Six’s presence to the cancer killing her father. Tremor is persuaded to offer both Sixes the immunity deal, and everyone agrees to join forces and attack. Alice finds she can siphon Demios’ power, but unfortunately gets his persona as well, so while Machiste is freed, now Alice is attacking everyone. A great bit of dialogue here- King Shark: I thought that lil’ girl was your friend or somethin’? Ragdoll: She was! She is! To be fair, most of my friends try to kill me at some point!

Ragdoll talks Alice down, Catman considers staying here, and the native he’s been working with says he’s done enough, gesturing around at the casualties from this fight. Deadshot wants to settle his score with Lady Vic, and Bane tells him he will not permit Deadshot to kill her. In a rare mistake by Gail, Deadshot says fair enough and then shoots her in the knee (remember a bit ago when he ran out of ammo?). Deadshot also insists on leaving her behind, and Bane agrees.

Back at Belle Reeve, the teams are all present (less Lady Vic, Bane honors his word), and Amanda says she will take six of them to work for her occasionally, then sends them off to enjoy various luxury suites. Tremor comments that Dwarfstar is a rapist and serial killer. Amanda smirks and says she doesn’t think he will work out on the team.

Most of them enjoy a hot tub and patch up their friendships, for lack of a better word, and then get interrupted by King Shark. Black Alice brings the healer that brought Bane back from the edge of death to her home and uses him to cure her father. The issue ends with a scene many of us have been waiting for- Giganta settles accounts with Dwarfstar for arranging the death of her boyfriend, Ryan Choi, the Atom. She seduces him out of his size belt and beats him badly with her own growth powers, and then starts what sounds like it will be a very painful interrogation about him, and presumably who killed Ryan. Coming up soon is the Secret Six in Action Comics in a two parter that finishes here next month.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

As I said last month, Catman worked great as a Warlord stand-in. The odd sort of father-daughter dynamic with Bane and Scandal was restored, which I’ve been enjoying a lot. And I flat our loved the Giganta/Dwarfstar bit at the end, and wonder if a bit of that was Gail commenting on the editorial decision to kill her creation, Ryan Choi, without even telling her about it. Seeing Catman considering staying behind was great, as many fans (me included) speculated he would end up doing just that. Ragdoll was his usual odd self, and I’m going to be very curious to see who makes the cut to stay on the teams. I suspect Black Alice is gone if she got her father cured, that was her motivation for joining in the first place. Dwarfstar is clearly off the team, I’m not sure if Giganta will stay or go hunting Slade’s Titans herself. I do wonder if this is a set up for a Secret Six/Evil Titans clash down the road.

What I didn’t: As I said above, Gail seems to have made a rare error for her, with Deadshot kneecapping Lady Vic after running out of ammo. He didn’t just say he was out, the guns clicked empty. If he saved a bullet just in case, it would have been nice to have that explained. I also am not quite sure how Black Alice couldn’t dupe the magic powers of people right in front of her (Jeanette and Giganta) but then could suddenly get Demios. Her powers only work on Skartarans in Skartaris?

Over all, enjoyable as usual, and some nice plot threads left open for later, as well as possible future story hooks.

Comic Book Jobs: Teaching Comic Book Movies

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Movies

John BelushiCan you teach? Can you teach in Canada, ey?

And more importantly, can you teach Canadians about “The Comic Book Film”?

It’s no great secret that the comic book film has permeated popular culture over the years. It’s so ubiquitous, in fact, that even tweedy, slow-to-change universities have noticed it.

It’s even spread to Canada, to the campus of the University of Manitoba.

They’re looking for a “Sessional Instructor” for their Film Studies program (Summer Session).

You’ll be teaching three classes: The Art of Film, Film History and Film Genres: The Comic Book Film. Each class is 2.5 hours long and the session runs from May 2 - June 21, 2011.

Are there a lot of requirements? It’s a teaching position, Professor Sherlock, so do the math. There are a lot of requirements and a lot of hoops to jump through.

But if you’re already an experienced Canadian teacher you’ve probably met most of them already.

Brush up on your arguments for who’s stronger: Ang Lee’s Hulk or Louis Leterrier’s Incredible Hulk; the phallic symbolism of Wolverine’s claws; and How Many Times Do We Need To See Batman’s Origin Story? He’s an orphan, he’s got issues, we get it.

The application process comes complete with instructions that rival classic word problems: “A train leaving Calgary at 4pm and traveling at 65 km per hour...” so start filling it out early.

Better hurry, though. The listing expires on December 14.

Good luck, teachers!

Comic Book Jobs: Rebellion (UK)

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Independent

2000 AD“I Am The Law...of Human Resources!”

Rebellion, the British publisher of 2000 AD (home of Judge Dredd) and many other great British Comics) is in a hiring mood for the holidays.

Unfortunately, they aren’t looking for a new body to fill the Judge’s suit. They want a PR Coordinator.

You’ll be covering “PR and Marketing for all aspects of the publishing sides of the business.” This includes “the famous Sci-Fi comic 2000 AD and Sci-Fi/Fantasy book imprints Abaddon and Solaris, as well as some for the renowned computer games.”

Comics, books, games? This sounds like I’ve washed up on the shore of Fanboy Island!

You’ll be writing press releases, fielding incoming media inquiries, maintaining those all-important social media contacts, plus research and tracking.

Rebellion only wants you if you can (1) provide samples suitable to their needs and more importantly (2) “legally work in the UK.”

Good luck, job seekers!
