Sigil #4 Review

"> June 23, 2011 Marvel Comments Off Tweet

The first round of Marvel’s re-imagining of the Crossgen universe comes to an end with Sigil #4.  Will young Samantha Rey learn her true power and defeat Captain October, the very man who killed her mother?

Sigil #4

The crew of the El Cazador escaped inland on an island that’s playing home to a great and powerful artifact hidden by Sam’s mom.  October, pursuing both the treasure and the El Cazador, takes his ship, the Red Harvest, inland using his power from his sigil.  All out war breaks out eventually leading to October and Sam going toe-to-toe.  Sam stumbles upon the artifact, and uses her powers to jump from location to location to throw October off the path.  After revisiting her mother’s funeral, she learns the trigger phase.  When she goes back up against October, she speaks the phrase and unleashes the living weapon inside the artifact.  When she gets rid of October, she returns home only to find life has not necessarily gotten better for her as she’s too late to take a makeup test to save herself from a failing grade in one of her classes causing her dad to ground her and tighten the leash on her.  Meanwhile, Calico, Sam’s mentor, speaks with a mysterious woman.  It appears Sam might be some sort of savior in the making!

After the first half of this mini, I wasn’t so sure.  Things were jumbled and moving so fast to the point that I actually wanted a six part story.  I know…  I hardly ever want a six part story, but still, it almost felt necessary.  Whereas Mark Waid’s Ruse excelled at a perfect pace, it almost felt like Mike Carey, the writer of this series, struggled early with pacing.  Starting with last issue, though, Carey reigned it all in and gave us a fairly decent wrap up.  I actually believe that Sigil is more likely to have a second arc than Ruse unless Mark Waid is really excited about doing more.  Despite all this, Sigil really ended on a positive note that sets up the potential of bringing it back fairly strong.  In the end, I was happy to see Sigil end on a fun and more exciting note that was much more straightfoward than it seemed to be begin.  When it comes right down to it, I really recommend this mini to readers of all ages.  I think it shows the classic Marvel everyman character (yes, I guess that should be everyWOMAN, but I digress) that is easy to relate to and understand where that person is coming from.  I think it’s a good book for teenage girls to read because Sam isn’t too different than the average high school girl.  She’s facing bullies, uncertainty, and making mistakes.  We all go through this, but adding powers to all that would be even more difficult.

With Carey able to focus the last two issues into a fun and exciting book, and Leonard Kirk’s really pleasing art, I would like to see Sigil return for another mini, if not a full series of its own.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsNice wrap up from Carey and some really nice art from Kirk. All in all, I hope Sigil still has more to come. The last two issues improved, but as a whole, the first two issues need extra focus to get to the second half of the mini. Rating80%

Ultimate Avengers Vs. New Ultimates #5 Review

"> June 23, 2011 Marvel Comments Off Tweet

Things seem to be resolved in the big fight between Nick Fury’s Avengers and Carol Danver’s Ultimates.  Danvers is comatose and likely brain dead.  Tony Stark’s brother, Gregory, is now the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.  And he’s just dealt with Fury in the most hostile of ways.  All these things have happened, but at least two of these things aren’t what they appear.

Ultimate Avengers Vs. New Ultimates #5

Thanks to Blade’s vampire powers, the original Hulk, Dr. Banner’s mentor, has been hypnotized and subdued into becoming a normal human again.  He leads Fury and his team to his lab where he keeps his Hulk pills designed to give the user twenty four hours of immense power that he or she could control.  Once they have what they came for, Fury kills the doctor.  Five days later, on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Fury shows strange signs of not being dead.  Soon, he Hulks out.  The rest of his team, also powered up by the Hulk pills surround Gregory Stark, but the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. proves to be a bit too powerful for them with his own gadgets.  It’s revealed that Stark used the smuggled meta-humans as instruments of uprising in North Korea.  Faced with a tough decision, the Ultimates learn the truth about Gregory and join the fray with Fury’s Hulked up team.

This series has certainly been an exciting one.  Mark Millar used four issues to build suspense and it looks like the roller coaster has finally started to head down the hill at top speed.  The true enemy is revealed.  Characters that had some mysterious origins, like the “original” Hulk and “the Spider”, are coming face to face with judgment.  Gregory Stark, as expected, can’t be trusted.  This has gone from an espionage story to one with political implications.  It’s a good, deep story and the type of stuff we’ve been waiting for since the end of Ultimates 2.

As with most penultimate issues of an arc, this issue’s more about setting up the final confrontation between hero and villain.  While not quite as deep as the intrigue we saw in the first four issues, Millar still delivers a very solid story and has me very excited to see how this story will end.  Considering there’s a future for this version of the Avengers, it’s safe to say most of our heroes will remain, but what will happen with S.H.I.E.L.D.?  What’s going to be the perception of the Ultimates?  Will this version of the Avengers still exist with the Ultimates?  These are the questions that I came up with as I finished this issue and it’s really exciting to care this much about Millar’s Ultimate Universe creation again.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsVery nice set up for the final issue of the story. This story as a whole has gotten me really excited for the Ultimates and Ultimate Avengers again. Not quite as intriguing as the first four issues, but if you don't expect too much of that, this issue will treat you really well. Secret Avengers #14 Review

"> June 23, 2011 Marvel Comments Off Tweet

Valkyrie leads a battalion of soldiers into the war against Sin’s armies.  Despite the beliefs of some, this is a war she is all too familiar with and comes face to face with a ghost from her past.

Secret Avengers #14

Meet Hayes and Stevens, two star-crossed lovers in the military headed into the middle of a warzone.  When Valkyrie, who was personally sent by Steve Rogers to lead this group into battle, is lost in thought prior to the soldiers’ deployment, she thinks back to a similar situation many eons ago.  When an unstoppable war machine was marching toward Brunhilde’s home town, her life is forever changed when her trainer and lover is killed.  In the present, Hayes is about to be killed by one of Sin’s machines after she believed she brought it down.  At the last minute, Stevens takes the bullets for his lady love and dies.  Valkyrie is reminded of what her true purpose is…  She thinks back to when Odin, the leader of the invaders taking down her hometown, found her refusing to leave the side of her lover.  He offers her the chance to be an inspiration to all great warriors as his Valkyrie.  Her duty to lead and guide the honored dead to Valhalla would make her a goddess in many warriors’ eyes.  Seeing a similar situation play out in the present makes her realize that she must help Hayes bring her lover back to the base so he is not left in the middle of the war torn city.

It’s very clear that Nick Spencer’s take on his issues of Secret Avengers is an emotional one.  His .1 issue had a tragic ending.  The previous issue was a heroic one.  This one takes a look at the heart of a warrior woman that is rarely revealed.  While the true plot of this issue revolves around the tragic story of Stevens and Hayes, Brunhilde’s story is draws parallels to their tale and her town’s capture by Odin to Sin’s attack on the U.S.  It’s a very strong issue.  I knew right away that one of the two lovers would be killed, so it might have been a bit more predictible than Spencer’s most recent Secret Avengers issues, but predictable or not, it was a good, emotional issue that plays up what war so easily takes away from those fighting it.

As much as I have enjoyed Spencer’s stories, Scot Eaton’s art has been amazing.  His work reminds me of the great Salvador Larroca in the spread showing Sin’s mechs wrecking the city.  His scenes of Valkyrie’s past are gorgeous with an ominous Odin and a younger and more innocent Brunhilde on the brink of becoming a goddess.  I’m quickly becoming a huge fan of his work and really wishing these two could stick around longer than they are.  Even Adi Granov’s cover is striking, so from front cover to the last page, this is a visually stunning issue.

With the overall emotional tone Spencer has built and the gorgeous interiors from Eaton, they have one last issue that’s surely going to open up that even more – Black Widow’s story.  It surely will deal with the heartbreaking loss she just suffered in Fear Itself #3.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsEaton's art is amazing and Spencer keeps his foot on the emotional peddle as the Secret Avengers are doing all they can to keep the events of Fear Itself from destroying the planet.Despite how good Spencer's script is, it is a bit predictable. Rating90%

The Mighty Thor #3 Review

"> June 23, 2011 Marvel Comments Off Tweet

Silver Surfer has come for the Worldheart and plans to take it to his lord, Galactus.  If that’s not bad enough, poor Volstagg has run afoul in Broxton.

The Mighty Thor #3

Volstagg awakes excited for today, he’s going to work at Bill’s Diner to make the most glorious breakfast he can for the townspeople of Broxton.  Unfortunately, he comes across an angry mob of Christians led by the town’s reverend who’s ready to deliver a message to Asgard – they are no longer wanted in Broxton.  In Asgard, Surfer and Thor are playing out their own version of Clash of the Titans.  Odin stops them and brings things back under control.  Surfer gives the reason why he wants the Worldheart for Galactus.  He’s under the impression that taking the seed to Galactus would satiate the world devourer’s hunger forever.  Odin sends Surfer back to his master with nothing.  As Volstagg calls for war against Broxton, the Asgardians prepare to do battle with Galactus.  First, however, Thor stops by Sif’s chambers to show off his brand new armor…  But, don’t worry, with a naked Sif in front of him, he does what so many men would do – tells her he doesn’t have to leave quite yet.

What I really like about this series from Matt Fraction is that it has a personality.  For as much as I love Thor, I admit it’s easy for him to lose any semblance of a personality in his series.  For all those great battles he’s fought in, it’s normally played out the same way each time.  Thor’s the cock of the walk in Asgard, some guy with a lot of power shows up, there’s a skirmish that bloodies Thor, and they trade egos until a big battle comes about.  That’s a lot of Thor’s stories.  Even during the great Walk Simonson’s era on the book in the 1980s, this was the typical formula.  Even though Fraction follows the paces for the story, there’s a lot more personality in the characters.  Characters have funny oneliners.  Even Odin has some good ones and he’s never one I ever thought of as a funny guy.  I LOVED Volstagg’s reaction to the reverend proclaiming Jesus has risen.  It’s no big deal to him and why should it be?  He’s seen so many die and return that this young feller Jesus isn’t anything new.  The dialog in this series has been sharp and fun.  Oh…  And I cannot think of a time in such a short time (of three issues) that Thor’s been laid so often.  With the characters possessing such personality, the whole book has a personality fitting for the fans of Thor, especially the older, more mature crowd.

Gosh…  What can I say about Olivier Coipel?  The majority of this book is laid out in a multitude of frames on double pages.  It’s the type of stuff that came into popularity during the Silver Age with Jack Kirby telling stories in a visual style not often seen.  Coipel’s visuals are paced so well that the whole battle between Silver Surfer and Thor was so action packed and exciting that I could have watched this play out for another 30 pages.  If that was exciting, the scene in which Loki was looking to swipe a lock of Sif’s hair while she slept was actually pretty tense for a lighthearted sequence.  It too played out in the multiple frames spread out over a two-page format and unlike the high action of level ten fisticuffs, this was paced well but slightly different to set a different tone for the scene.  As good as Coipel always is, this may be one of his finest single issues ever.

As good as this was, look out for next month when the Asgardians take the fight directly to Galactus!

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsSharp script full of fun, excitement, and personality with absolutely stunning art.I couldn't be happier with this book and the series as a whole, so no negatives from me! Rating100%

Jack Hammer: Political Science #3 Review

"> June 26, 2011 Reasonably Priced Comics 0 comments Tweet

Jack Hammer, private eye, and former street level superhero, is on a case that is proving to be much more than he thought.  It all began with the murder of a high ranking businessman.  Now the victim’s widow is missing, and the man who holds all the answers is far more dangerous than anyone bargained for.

Jack Hammer: Political Science #3

Jack and his team, including police detective Martin (who was originally assigned to the murder of the business man), Jack’s assistant, Ramona, and Jack’s driver, Stu, are trying to piece together information about a company called Technotrends.  This is where the victim worked and where he discovered some not so great things about.  Unable to break into the security of the final website they gathered, Jack, Martin, and Stu head to an abandoned warehouse that seems to be using an awful lot of water and power for it to truly be abandoned.  Jack, not exactly subtle, hence his Jack Hammer name, creates a diversion so Martin is able to enter the building to find the kidnapped Kara Newman.  Ramona discovers that the victim’s boss, the head of Technotrends, is actually a really high level super human wanted for over forty murders (including a high level superheroine).  Will Jack be able to stop the murderer without being killed?  And who is the mysterious woman Martin runs into as he searches for the missing widow?

I’ve liked this series from the start.  Writer Brandon Barrows added the right amounts of intrigue with some nice thrills.  I legitimately care that the good guys get to the bottom of this issue.  I am legitimately invested to see how this ends.  It’s no small thing to do this in an indie comic.  A lot of indie books will boil the life out of the story or show flaws in the story by focusing too much on having a “cool” hero or awesome monsters, etc.  When doing a street-level crime book at the core, Barrows made sure he gave us enough characterization mixed in with a solid story that has depth.  It isn’t just about Jack Hammer once being a hero and using his fists to solve crimes.  It isn’t an overblown bad guy trying unleash hell on Earth in an equally overblown scheme.  Everything seems to be balanced properly.  And speaking of the bad guy…  Havelock Beltram is just delightfully evil.  I love it when the heavies are just so damn tickled to be bad.  He makes no bones about it, he’s going to do whatever he feels necessary to meet the end goal.  Sure, he may have to kill some poor, innocent girl, but he actually seems to take pleasure in being what he is.  I love that in the bad guy.

I really like Ionic’s work on two different levels.  First of all, his covers are amazing.  I’d like to see Marvel pick him up for some cover work.  He has a quality that’s reminiscent of Adi Granov.  I would love to see him use this style with Black Widow or Steve Rogers.  In his sequential style on this book, it really sets a great tone.  This side of his art is rough and “dirty”.  I don’t have to read the words to understand he’s depicting a gritty crime story.  But his style also has another quality to it.  I wonder what he could do with some of the DC characters like the Demon or even John Constantine with this style.  I honestly would love to see him get a crack at some characters from the “Big Two”.  I think he could really find some success with some well known characters if given the opportunity.

My only real critique comes right at the very end.  I get that Jack has been knocked down and I understand it appears he’s eventually tossed out a window.  However, there’s a jump between one frame to the next that isn’t exactly clear what happened.  I’m not sure if one more frame or one more word bubble would have made it clearer, but I feel one more extra step was required to make sure we understood exactly what happened to Jack.

Overall, this is good book.  I really think this is something I could recommend to just about anyone who enjoys genre.  Not only that, but I’m also finding myself really loving what Barrows and Ionic do.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsSolid story and an art style that fits the genre. I like that the story doesn't bog down in the characters but gives us what we need to know where we are. That's something not many are able to do well. The biggest problem is the end. There's a bit of confusion, but the understanding is there. I just wish it was a little better defined. Rating85%
