Freedom Fighters #9 Review

Tagged with: Freedom Fighters  Jimmy PalmiottiFreedom Fighters #9

The most recent attempt at a Freedom Fighters’ ongoing series comes to an end with issue nine. The Federal Government has decided to no longer fund the Freedom Fighters, which is apparently leading to the team disbanding. Personally, I find this odd as in previous miniseries, they were based out of “the Heartland,” some other dimensional retreat of Uncle Sam’s. Maybe with so many Americans being foreclosed on these days, it’s not available to them any longer?

Much of this issue plays up Andy Franklin, the second Human Bomb, and the unstable nature of his powers. He tries a redesign of his current costume, hoping to become less intimidating, as he asks the others, especially the Ray, to see if he can join another hero team. Let’s face it, while many of the other Freedom Fighters have options, someone who needs to either be in a special tank or wearing a big radiation suit has limited career choices. There’s a somewhat ominous scene in the Oval Office between the President and someone called Trumont about the dangers of letting Franklin run around on his own.

Much of the rest of the issue is the team dealing with their being shut down, and a spotlight of several pages on Black Condor, back on the Indian reservations, fighting drug dealers and the like on his own. He states he was empowered to protect the land and he will to do so with or without the government’s help or approval.

The issue ends with Black Condor, Ray, and the Human Bomb fighting a group calling themselves Population Control, and claiming to be from the future, or a future at least. The Freedom Fighters win, but Bomb’s suit is breached. Condor carries him off before the explosion actually harms anyone, but Trumont uses that as his excuse to take Andy into custody. So the series ends as it has run, a not wholly clear cut victory after a fight with someone with some kind of skewed political agenda. With the series cancelled at this point, I don’t when we’ll learn the fate of Andy Franklin. I half expect he’ll be held and experimented on by yet another dark office of the government (comic writers, especially in this series, love those), or he’ll get an off-panel death and/or be used as a weapon in the next major crossover after Flashpoint.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

This series never came together for me, and continued in that vein to the very end. I don’t like the government as bad guy all the time, and would really like the team to have been given at least one actual, unquestionable win sometime in here, aside from against the idiots at the Indian casino in one issue in a few page throw away scene. Uncle Sam seems to take all this very calmly, never really going to bat for the team. Miss America, who the team was saddled with as some kind of watchdog for the government, never even appears in this closing issue.

I have always really liked the Freedom Fighters as a concept and liked a lot of the original characters, and even the second generations. I am indifferent to the new Human Bomb, so his plight here doesn’t really move me. I liked Phantom Lady II, the late Delilah Tyler, much better than the third version. Oddly, both II (Tyler) and III (Knight) were given names shared by Golden Age characters, and I’m not sure that was ever followed up on. I grant that Stormy Knight (sorry, that really sounds like an adult film actress’ name) got better throughout her appearances, but she still has a way to go to live up to the first two women to use that name in my opinion. I really liked Black Condor II, and was displeased at his death in Infinite Crisis, but I will admit the new one is growing on me. I understand the government cutting back in times of financial hardship, but this really seemed like just an odd choice.

I was hoping to really like this series, I rather enjoyed the minis that came before. Some key differences, again in my opinion:

They were heroes, facing threats of all sorts, not just politically themed menaces.

Miss America was a hero, not a rather hard to like government watchdog who threatened people to get her way.

Uncle Sam was a key player, not missing for most of it as he was here.

No deaths. I really don’t see that the first crippling, and then killing, of Firebrand really served any purpose whatsoever. Yes, heroes sometimes pay the ultimate price (until they come back in some contrived story), but this just seemed pointless.

Anyway, just some of my thoughts on what could have been a great series but I found somewhat disappointing.

Freedom Fighters #8 Review

Tagged with: Freedom Fighters  Jimmy Palmiotti  Uncle SamFreedom Fighters #8

DC has announced a wave of cancellations in the near future, and Freedom Fighters is among them. This, in fact, is the penultimate issue. The vast majority of this story is a major fight between the Jester, patriotic villain, and Uncle Sam, symbol of the nation. They clash on both the physical and rhetorical levels, arguing as they battle, about the country, the direction it should take, and how to get there. The Jester, but likely no one else, is absolutely stunned when Sam wins. There’s a brief funeral for Firebrand, who does, in fact, actually seem to be dead.

As an aside, let’s review that name’s history in DC for a moment. Firebrand I was Rod Reily, wounded at Pearl Harbor in his civilian guise, and then later killed by the villain Silver Monkey. Firebrand II, his sister Danette, got powers in what became the All Star Squadron’s first case, was a member of that group, and later killed off panel by the Dragon King. The third was Alex Sanchez, who was a cyborg who briefly had his own title, and was killed in Roulette’s super powered arena. And now Firebrand the Fourth, Andre Twist, killed in action by the evil grandson of a World War II hero. Personally, I’d not take that name were I to embark on a heroic career in the DCU, but that’s me.

Because the funeral wasn’t depressing enough, the villains from the super prison earlier in this arc are shown escaping the wreckage of the place that held them, swearing vengeance on the Freedom Fighters. Joke’s on them, as the President holds a meeting with Miss America and Uncle Sam and announces he’s disbanding the team due to budget cuts, so there IS no more Freedom Fighters for them to go after.

One of my ongoing issues with this book has been the team’s utter lack of clear-cut victories. That happens again here. They beat the Jester, in the process burying one of their own and getting essentially fired by the President. I think this is one of the reasons the book may have failed- the heroes keep almost winning and not quite losing, but that’s about as good as it got. That, and every single foe they fought had either some weird political agenda or ties to some government project/secret. You can only do that so many times before it gets old.

I like the idea of the Freedom Fighters, and I’ve really enjoyed some of Palmiotti and Gray’s past work- I think they were amazing on the first year of Power Girl. But something here never quite jelled for me, and since it’s being cancelled, I am guessing I’m not the only one. Next month will be an interesting challenge for them to try and wrap up the “we’ve been fired” aftermath with the escaped super-cons as well.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

Ok, this will sound odd, but I give them credit for Firebrand staying dead. I was half expecting some last minute really weird resurrection. They didn’t do that, and I give them points for that. The funeral scene was well done, and they included characters who haven’t been in the book so far, like Red Bee II, which made for a nice sense of history.

On the other hand, as I said, they can’t win for losing. They beat a non-powered villain with a few magic trinkets, who apparently staged all this to try and kill Uncle Sam and take his place, and lose Firebrand in the process. They suffer through the funeral, and then get fired. My, how uplifting. Nice to see Sam back, but his new look is a bit odd, especially the Sgt. Pepper wrist-bands on the sleeves of his jacket.

Freedom Fighters #4 Review

Tagged with: Freedom Fighters  Jimmy Palmiotti  Phantom Lady  Unlce SamThe introductory arc of the Freedom Fighters ongoing title continues with part four of “American Nightmare.” I’ve been a Freedom Fighters fan for a long time, and I hate to say this, but I’m giving serious thought to dropping this title. I’ve been following along with the previous issue, and I feel like I came in on the third reel of a movie here (yeah, I’m old. I remember when movies came on reels. Move on).

In the issue we learn that the Golden Age hero Jester was part of a conspiracy known as the Arcadians, who have been manipulating history for centuries. The current Jester, shown last issue, is the original’s grandson. Enclave A, yet another top secret metahuman prison that no one has ever heard of, gets infiltrated and attacked, and the Freedom Fighters really do look like they are busily fighting nothing in the midst of the desert. You never see the bad guys, they never say anything, no attacks come in at the heroes, and the bad guys all teleport away. It’s like one of those movies where someone has an imaginary friend. There’s a lot of back story about Jester and the Arcadians, including seeing the first meeting of Jester and the Freedom Fighters.

In the present, the FF (yeah, I’m gonna call them that) use Phantom Lady’s tech to follow the bad guys that teleported away, and land in the middle of a riot/break out at Enclave A. There’s a lot of fighting, and the guards burst in with some kind of energy weapons powerful enough to drop Miss America, while the warden looks on, knowing who the heroes are and not caring. As the jail fracas continues, the GA Jester, gravely ill, waits for government agents to get into his mansion and then blows it, and himself, to bits.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

There just doesn’t seem to be a lot good going on here. The team isn’t working well together, another Golden Age hero goes bad, the story is confusing, and the art is odd. They actually manage to make Phantom Lady unattractive in her first panel, and that takes some doing. I was also really thrown by the fighting bad guys we the readers can’t see bit, as well as where this fight came from. I had high hopes for this series, but it’s just not meeting them. I’m having trouble believing this is the same team of writers I liked so much on Power Girl’s first year.
