Top 10 Surprises @ BEA

I love BEA, better known as Book Expo America. It’s the premiere American book show - a place to mingle with publishers, authors, editors, bookstore owners and see what books will be coming out in the very near future.

Before BEA took up permanent residence in NYC, it used to pop up periodically in Los Angeles, and I always made it a point to drop in.

One time, while I was eavesdropping, I heard two publishing stereotypes - one even wore a brown corduroy sportcoat with leather elbow patches - discussing the future of the industry: “These blogs, they’re just so much nonsense, right?”

Whatever you enjoy about publishing, you’ll find something to love at BEA. The current one just ended, and was full of surprises.

Here are 10 of the best ones:

10. Nobody’s talking about Green Lantern

9. F. Scott Fitzgerald cosplayers drinking with Hemingway cosplayers

8. Borders has asked for help from the Hero Initiative

7. Comic book sales may be down, but they still kick the crap out of any literary novel set in Fairfield County or Westchester

6. New iPad app: Where Books Used To Be

5. Giant cats

4. Books-A-Million cuts back; changes name to Books-A-Hundred

3. Billy Mumy to buy Barnes & Noble; rename it Barnes & Barnes & Barnes

2. The food court should be called Taste of CCI

And the #1 surprise at this year’s BEA?

1. They still make books?

Top 10 Surprises in Thor

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Movies,Reviews,Marvel Comics

Have you seen the new Thor movie yet? And if not, why not?

Of the summer's four big comic book movies - Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America and X-Men: First Class – it's the one with the distinguished pedigree (Kenneth Branagh! Sir Anthony Hopkins! Natalie Portman!) and one of the least likely super-hero movies besides Ant-Man or Metamorpho.

Curiosity alone makes it worth $10.

Having said all that, there were still a number of things about Thor that surprised me. Here's my Top 10.

10. It's not just his hammer that's called Mjolnir

9. Cameo by Stan Lee Media

8. His real name is "Sore"; he has a speech impediment

7. Shout out to Kirby; that's Kirby Carruthers, the assistant lighting director

6. Natalie Portman should be in every movie. Just sayin'.

5. Climate change deniers insist Bifrost Bridge is not melting faster than Alaskan permafrost bridge

4. Sif is a Goddess, not an S.T.D.

3. Thor got his hammer from Abin Sur

2. Heimdall good at Heimlich

1. Up next? Thor 2: Warriors 3

I just found out David Letterman beat me to it by three days. Fortunately, none of ours overlap. You can see his at: http://www.cbs.com/late_night/late_show/video/?vs=Top Ten
