Comic Book Jobs: Ohio State University

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials

Alex TothIf there's one thing better than the great chocolate-peanut butter combo, it's museums and comics. If you know both, there's a place for you at Ohio State University.

The Ohio State University Libraries are looking for an Assistant Curator at their Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. This is a position that's on the tenure track, so once in, you could be set until retirement.

How cool is that job? "The Cartoon Library & Museum's primary mission is to develop a comprehensive research collection of materials documenting American printed cartoon art (editorial cartoons, comic strips, comic books, graphic novels, sports cartoons, and magazine cartoons) and to provide access to these collections."

Pretty cool.

How big is their collection? "It is the largest and most comprehensive academic research facility of its kind in the United States. Current holdings include more than 450,000 original cartoons; 36,000 books; 51,000 serial titles; and 3,000 linear feet of manuscript materials.

Pretty darned big.

Lots of nifty qualifications are necessary to snag this, and in addition to the usual academic smarts you'll need "knowledge through course work and/or relevant scholarly activity & experience of the history of graphic arts, especially printed cartoon art."

Also, you'll have to be able to "left 40 pounds." Perhaps because older cartoonists used to draw on much heavier stock.

Good luck, job seekers! Don't forget to Dewey your decimals!

Comic Book Jobs: South Park

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Television

South ParkYes, I'm cheating again, but only slightly as you'll see. South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone's genius TV show, needs a little bit of help. Perhaps yours?

They need an Animator, a Technical Artist, and my favorite (and why they are listed here), Storyboard Design Artist.

The storyboard gig is entry-level, but includes Background Design and (the cool part) Character Design.

You'll need experience with the various computer design programs like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

They'd like you to know that this is "not a compositing job" but you can expect an "intense, creative, and rewarding production schedule beginning in April."

You will have to be living in Los Angeles for the duration, but how bad is that, really?

Good luck, job seekers!

Comic Book Jobs: Medical Writer

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials

MedikidzComic book jobs come up in the oddest places, and now here’s one where a medical background could really help you out.

Medikidz is a “multimedia company founded by two doctors to explain medicine to young people in a way they can understand.”

How do they do this? Mostly through comic books with titles like What's Up With Rachel? Medikidz Explain Brain Tumours and What's Up With Tiffany's Dad? Medikidz Explain Melanoma.

Each of their diseased-based comics “is written by a specialist doctor in the field. It is then peer reviewed by a leading consultant, to ensure medical accuracy.

Now they need a Medical Writer on staff to help them out and make sure the doctor-writers are staying on message and delivering interesting comics.

This involves “managing the creation of text to explain an extensive range of childhood diseases and their treatment; editing manuscripts for technical and grammatical accuracy; liaising with authors (doctors) and providing feedback to them; and insuring delivery of manuscripts as per agreed deadlines.”

This sounds a lot like the work of an Editor, but maybe in England things are a bit different.

If you can walk the medical walk and talk the comic book talk, you could thrive in this “fast-paced environment."

You’ll need previous experience working with kids and an understanding of child-like language is advantageous and all applicants must be London-based.

Good luck, ye olde job seekers!

Comic Book Jobs: London Calling

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials

Great British Comics 1London is one of my favorite cities in the world. I’ve been over there a bunch of times, eaten the food, sipped the tea and guzzled many pints of ale. And while I can only dream of working there, you might actually be able to do it. Here are three chances. These jobs are mostly through agencies and it’s all a big secret who the company is doing the hiring, but if you’re really interested, you’ll find out soon enough. One such unnamed company - a gaming company - is looking for a Content Coordinator in Marketing. Among the many responsibilities listed is: “Represent first and third-party content providers and organise promotional activities for new and current content; Work closely with Third-Party relations department to facilitate publisher requests for price promotion and in-store marketing; and cross promote game, comics and video categories for mutual benefit.” Another unnamed British company is looking for a Brand Assurance Rep. This is just a part-time, Wednesday-Friday three-month contract and involves working on product approvals.

There are a lot of paperwork functions listed, but this one stuck out: “obtain all necessary third party approvals from Artists, Sales, Marketing, Senior Management, Production, Advertising/Publicity and Talent, and DC Comics in New York.” What’s that all about, Alfie?

And finally, there’s an unnamed Children’s Book Publisher in central London that’s looking for a Children’s Fiction Designer. The usual design skills and expertise are required, but I thought this was interesting: “a background in children's publishing, magazine or comics design...would be highly advantageous.” Good luck, job seekers! [Artwork: Great British Comics by Paul Gravett and Peter Stanbury]
