True Blood #4 Review

Tagged with: Alan Ball  Bill Compton  Sookie Stackhouse  True BloodTrue Blood #4

IDW Comics continues it’s limited series based on the HBO smash hit True Blood. Show creator Alan Ball is behind the story, so it very much feels like the show, which is very different from the Sookie Stackhouse novels the program is based on.

The main players from the drama are trapped inside Merlotte’s tavern, and being forced to go over stories of shame from their past, which somehow is feeding the powerful mystic creature that holds them there, a demon like being from local Indian legend called an Imp Shaloop, but presently going by “Ted.”

Sam manages to hurt it, but is thrown off, and two more redneck bar patrons, who might as well be wearing Star Trek red shirts, try to attack and are killed fairly grusomely. Sam, trying to prevent this, agrees to tell his own story of shame. He was running wild as a dog back when he was a teenager, and befriended another dog. They were both captured and used for experiments of some kind. Sam eventually managed to free himself, but his friend died, and he feels as though he let him down. Ted savors the story and the shame, then kills the remaining redneck anyway. Outside, the law, in the persons of Bud Deerborne and Andy Bellefluer acknowledge there is nothing they can do about this strange mystic barrier, and settle in their cruiser to wait out the storm or the barrier falling.

Jason steps up, and to no one’s surprise, his tale involves sex. His English teacher, a Mrs. Lemore, went from encouraging him in class to giving him private tutoring to seducing him. Beign Jason (and in fairness, being a teenaged boy presented with a sexy woman who wants him) he goes along with it, and his friend walks in on them, which ends the issue.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

They are staying true to the feel of the show, which makes sense given the talent behind the book. Sam and Jason’s stories both make sense for their characters and backgrounds. The others are in character as well, including Eric sitting back and watching the others fight the creature, not deigning to risk himself unless there’s a benefit for him.

The story is seeming to drag on a bit- I’m not sure this needed to be the planned six issues. I’m also not wild about the art, which seems to leave something to be desired in terms of clarity or sharpness. As I said earlier in the series, it’s odd they base this on a VERY adult show, include profanity, but shy away from nudity, in this case the teacher seducing Jason keeping her bra on during their big sex scene. I’m also not sure where the “Hey, it’s my turn to die now” rednecks keep coming from, or why they don’t learn to not attack and/or antagonize this creature.
