Ruse #3Emma’s literally in a fight for her life in the newest issue of Mark Waid’s Ruse!
While Simon uses Emma’s foxy boxing bout as a distraction to sneak into the back offices at a gambling joint, Emma has to use every bit of the skills she’s learned to avoid being pummeled. Simon eventually starts a fire and grabs all the files he can get his hands on. In the ledgers, he finds just about every important person listed with astronomical debts. When they get back to their headquarters, they find all of Archard’s Agents poisoned from the tobacco smoked in one of their pipes. Two die, but the rest are revived. Simon, showing unusual anger at being attacked in this way, becomes even more frustrated when he can’t seem to put everything together. Worse yet, there’s no connecting clue to the gambling debts and the attacks on his agents. Simon and Emma attend a prestigious stakes race and discover the fix is in when the winning horse is caught for doping after the fact. The pieces finally start falling into place when Emma makes one simple observation… Why hasn’t the orchestrator come after Simon already?
Mark Waid is such a good writer that you can easily get into each comic he writes. He knows how to excite you with action, or pull you into a mystery, or make you chuckle. Simon and Emma are so close to one another, their banter is not only interesting, but also what makes them work as a duo. A couple times in this book alone, I laughed out loud at their bickering. It didn’t matter if you’re new to them or have read them all the way back in the Crossgen days, they work together so well without needing to rely on sexual tension. Their relationship is actually refreshing because they don’t have that tension.
To my surprise, this chapter had a different artist. This time around Minck Oosterveer took the illustrator billing. It’s not that I didn’t like the art by Mirco Pierfederici, but there was always something about it that struck me funny. I think Pierfederici would be great on a lot of other books, but something about these characters and this setting just didn’t sit right. Oosterveer is an exception. Right away, I spotted the slightly different style and, right away, I felt much more comfortable. In this particular issue, there were several frames that made me just stop, look at it, and think, “now THAT is Ruse“.
Overall, it is a really nice set up for the conclusion. It was nice to see Simon’s temper get the best of him to remind us that he is human after all.
