Batwoman Issue 0 Review

Tagged with: Batman  Batwoman  Flamebird  J H WilliamsBatwoman #0 Review

DC gives us a sneak preview this week of a series coming later, with the special issue of Batwoman 0. The issue features an ongoing surveillance on Batwoman being conducted by Batman (Wayne). He is in the process of both evaluating her skills and confirming her secret identity. Batman muses about what he’s learned about her from Dick (a nice change), and her back story with the Religion of Crime. Bruce follows her to the graves of her mother and twin sister, and observes her strained relationship with her father. There’s also a nice scene of her with her cousin, Bette Kane. In current continuity, Bette is Flamebird, an on again, off again Teen Titan. Originally, Bette and Kathy were the Golden Age Batwoman and Batgirl.

After watching Kate in a variety of different disguises, Bruce decided one final test is needed. He attacks Kate when she’s leaving a grocery store. She not only holds her own, but pulls a move of her own devising, which surprises Bruce, a rare occurrence. In the end, he approves of her motives and abilities, and remarks they will need to talk about the future. Personally, I think that will have something to do with Batman, Inc.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

Batwoman is presented as a competent, skilled character. While Bruce manages to observe her undetected, as far as we know, she does get in a good shot on him in a fight, which is nice to see. The bit about Bette is well done, too- she’s been an underused and even almost comic relief character. I also liked that the oft omniscient Bruce is acknowledging that he’s getting information from Dick. Batwoman being gay is very lightly touched on, but not a huge deal, which I think is appropriate for an overview. It’s a part of her character, not all she is.

The only thing I don’t like is the same thing that prevented my getting Kate’s run when she was the lead in Detective Comics. This art is too stylized for my tastes. Kate, with her very pale skin and vibrant lip color make her look like the Joker. I also find the oddly shaped inset pictures to be visually jarring.

I love the art and the coloring!
The white skin and red lips gives her a striking look and I think JHW III is using it as a way for the character to intimidate her prey when she’s on the hunt.
