Freedom Fighters #4 Review

Tagged with: Freedom Fighters  Jimmy Palmiotti  Phantom Lady  Unlce SamThe introductory arc of the Freedom Fighters ongoing title continues with part four of “American Nightmare.” I’ve been a Freedom Fighters fan for a long time, and I hate to say this, but I’m giving serious thought to dropping this title. I’ve been following along with the previous issue, and I feel like I came in on the third reel of a movie here (yeah, I’m old. I remember when movies came on reels. Move on).

In the issue we learn that the Golden Age hero Jester was part of a conspiracy known as the Arcadians, who have been manipulating history for centuries. The current Jester, shown last issue, is the original’s grandson. Enclave A, yet another top secret metahuman prison that no one has ever heard of, gets infiltrated and attacked, and the Freedom Fighters really do look like they are busily fighting nothing in the midst of the desert. You never see the bad guys, they never say anything, no attacks come in at the heroes, and the bad guys all teleport away. It’s like one of those movies where someone has an imaginary friend. There’s a lot of back story about Jester and the Arcadians, including seeing the first meeting of Jester and the Freedom Fighters.

In the present, the FF (yeah, I’m gonna call them that) use Phantom Lady’s tech to follow the bad guys that teleported away, and land in the middle of a riot/break out at Enclave A. There’s a lot of fighting, and the guards burst in with some kind of energy weapons powerful enough to drop Miss America, while the warden looks on, knowing who the heroes are and not caring. As the jail fracas continues, the GA Jester, gravely ill, waits for government agents to get into his mansion and then blows it, and himself, to bits.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

There just doesn’t seem to be a lot good going on here. The team isn’t working well together, another Golden Age hero goes bad, the story is confusing, and the art is odd. They actually manage to make Phantom Lady unattractive in her first panel, and that takes some doing. I was also really thrown by the fighting bad guys we the readers can’t see bit, as well as where this fight came from. I had high hopes for this series, but it’s just not meeting them. I’m having trouble believing this is the same team of writers I liked so much on Power Girl’s first year.

Comic Books Jobs: Checking Out Craigslist

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Conventions,Editorials,Movies

Comic Book GuyIf you have the gift of retail, draw fast, love to intern or want to sell some of your stuff, Craigslist has quite the deals for you.

In Boston, The Million Year Picnic comic book store in Harvard Square has “immediate openings for part-time employment.”

If you have “retail, customer service or sales experience” that’d be a huge plus.

A knowledge of comic books and graphic novels is helpful “but not required. You do have to be able to show up for work every Wednesday morning because that’s new comic day.

Taking its name from Ray Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles, The Million Year Picnic is probably one of the oldest surviving comic book stores around.

The Stan Lee Documentary is looking for another infusion of interns in Los Angeles. It’ll be for the usual run of intern-based tasks and the gig will run from January through the Spring of 2011.

In New York City, an “Events Company” called Etch U Productions is looking to hire a couple of fast artists “to draw comic book-style caricatures and panels” at a special event in January 2011. You gotta be outgoing, friendly and able to complete each drawing within 10 minutes so the audience doesn’t get restless.

In Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Comic Book And Science Fiction Convention is looking for vendors. You get a 3x8 Dealer’s Table + chairs and they promise “the lowest rates for a show featuring fantastic Guest Speakers and give-aways.”Click the link for the actual listing and visit their website for info about past shows and what’s upcoming.

Good luck, Craigslist surfers!

Iron Man/Thor #2 Review

Tagged with: Iron Man  ThorIron Man/Thor #2

In Iron Man/Thor #2, the High Evolutionary is out stealing stuff from Asgard and looking for Tony Stark.  What the High Evolutionary is doing is truly, well, evolutionary.

High Evolutionary has recruited Ulik the troll and the magical alchemist Diablo to grab the Destroyer armor from the shattered remains of Asgard.  Ulik’s strength has been boosted and Diablo has a new bag of tricks that turns Thor’s own lightning against the God of Thunder.  The odd couple make off with the armor leaving Thor with the mystery of where they could have gone.  Meanwhile, after being overpowered by a bigger, stronger Crimson Dynamo, Tony Stark is taken to a heavenly place to have a chat with the High Evolutionary.  Here the Evolutionary explains what he’s up to…  With the help of his “New Men”, animals turned into humanoid slaves, High Evolutionary is looking to build a brand new, technologically based god for the 21st century.  What does he want with Stark?  What else, he’s looking to make Iron Man the vessel for this new god.

As of right now, this mini-series contains two separate stories on a crash course with one another.  The first is Thor defending, losing, and searching for the Destroyer armor.  The second is Tony Stark learning what the heck is going on with the stronger Crimson Dynamo and, as he learns in a very civilized conversation with the High Evolutionary, what the bigger picture is that drives the story.  These two stories actually create a very good mix of technology, mythology, and theology, and classic role reversal.

Thor, in a story that is more like a good old fashioned mystery, is left searching for clues about Diablo’s destination, to which he called the Hermetica.  He takes a dragon who’s skilled in tracking and ends up at the Smithsonian.  Now you have a warrior with one of the greatest weapons ever created in a place as delicate as the Smithsonian.  Talk about your ultimate bull in a china shop situation.  In the end, Thor is left having to put the pieces together that the High Evolutionary’s Hermetica is hidden inside an ancient book written by 9th/10th century alchemist Esteban Corazon de Ablo…  Get it…  DE…  ABLO?  What makes this so interesting is that you normally think of Thor as the bruiser and here he is having to use his brain and some cunning.

Stark, on the other hand, is right in the middle of very classic comic book villainy.  The High Evolutionary is a throwback to one a time when comics were big, bombastic, over the top stories.  Back in his day, villains didn’t sit and wait for the moment to kill the Skrull Queen knowing it would make them the most trusted and powerful people in the world.  These guys made big arrivals and flat out told you, “Hey!  I’m gonna really do something bad!  AND I’m going to do it in a really crazy way!”  The High Evolutionary’s plans include making slaves out of animals turned into humanoid “people”, giving a very odd mix of villains some super duper powers, planning to do away with those people/animals without a single thought or care about eliminating them when he gets what he wants, and, oh yeah, create a brand new god.  He’s kinda not messing around.  Like in a classic comic book villain kind of way.

You might think that the Iron Man side of the story is the weaker of the two, but it really isn’t.  Stark is talking god stuff, something he puts very little value in anyway, while also talking, and using, technology.  It’s not Thor talking god stuff either, so the other role reversal is finding Stark in the discussion of gods, not the actual god in the story.

So, all in all, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning have crafted a nice little comic book story that has some very complex ideas and execution.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsNice use of the characters in the story and really nice art from Scot Eaton. Not many, but there's still a little bit of a concern that the story may fizzle by issue four. We've come a long way in just two issues. Rating90%

Jonah Hex #62 Review

Brad Meltzer: Decoded

Posted by Tom MasonCategories:Editorials,Television,Dark Horse Comics,DC Comics

Brad MeltzerRemember when The History Channel was just D-Day Invasions, tank battles and old guys talking about shooting Nazis?

That changed with shows like American Pickers and Pawn Stars.

And it’s going to be a little different tonight (December 2; check local listings). Author and comic book writer Brad Meltzer (DC Comics’ Identity Crisis & Dark Horse’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer) is the host of a new reality TV series called Decoded, about solving some of history's mysteries.

Of course, this is the modern era so it won’t be a bunch of gray-haired white people sitting in leather-bound conservatories holding court and being intercut with archival footage of beachheads and bombing runs.

Nope. Meltzer and his gang of historians have made it a race.

The premise seems simple enough: in each episode, the History Channel will give Meltzer one of 10 great mysteries and he and his team (Scott, McKinley and Buddy) will have to solve it before the show’s over.

(I kinda think they'll succeed, or at least come up with a plausible explanation.)

Mysteries include the ever-mysterious Lost Confederate Gold, plus stuff like Presidential symbols and the inside of the Statue of Liberty. And not every solution is aliens or Freemasons.

So they promise.

Here’s the promo from the History Channel website with lots of other nice videos to watch as well.

Here's a short interview with Meltzer about his show.

In a classic example of decent cross-promotion, Meltzer’s got a new book coming out in January, a thriller called The Inner Circle.

I love histories and mysteries and this mash-up of Amazing Race and National Treasure knows me too well. I’m in.

And while I can't say for certain, I think Meltzer might be the only thriller writer/comic book writer/reality TV show host out there right now.

Wikileaks: Comic Book Secrets

Betty And VeronicaIf you took the time to read through the nearly 250,000 documents released this week via Wikileaks, you’d find a comic book connection in several of them. We at Comix 411 have nothing but free time and did the heavy lifting for you. Here are the comic book-related highlights from the document dump:

When visiting with US President Barack Obama, the CIA codename for Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is “Bucky.”

Interrogators at Guantanamo routinely asked prisoners to choose: Betty or Veronica?

Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Jong Il sometimes dresses up as Wildcat before he tours a factory. In other news, North Korea still has factories.

Behind his back, the EU had a nickname for the George Bush administration: The Inferior Five. Bush himself was often referred to as The White Feather.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been trying to buy Sigils on the black market, but keeps ending up with copies of Mystic and Scion, which she bags and boards for investment purposes, just in case.

Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, has himself drawn into panels of imported graphic albums by Milo Manara.

Several countries have called on the US to intervene in Marvel Comics’ plans to kill-off Spider-Man. The coalition would prefer it be Giant-Man.

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi uses Botox to maintain his manly appearance. He also hates being called Gaddafi Duck. He prefers “Plucky Duck” and has decreed that “Gaddafi” now rhymes with “Plucky.”

In the mid-1990s, Chinese President Jiang Zemin regularly faxed Kevin Eastman, saying he would throw out a lead-painted toy for every issue of Big Numbers he published.

In the bedroom, First Lady Carla Bruni often refers to her husband French President Nicolas Sarkozy as “Professor Zoom.”

Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran, has been pitching Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers story ideas to Boom! and may write a Muppet Show Christmas Special.

Secretary of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon regularly goes on midnight drives around Manhattan looking for the Baxter Building, the Daily Bugle offices and Yancy Street.

Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf often attends New York comic conventions dressed as a storm trooper. He strongly believes Han Solo shot first.

For six weeks in 1999, then British Prime Minister Tony Blair was willing to invade Paris to prove his theory that Moebius was the name of one of the original Three Stooges.

In order to shut down the tainted Cuban prison, the Obama administration offered sweeteners to try to get other countries to take Guantanamo detainees, including Wakanda, Latveria and Pellucidar.

England’s Prince Charles has been banned from the Byrne Robotics message board for his insistence that Byrne inks with a Sharpie, although the Bonny Prince pronounces it “Shar Pei.”

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan still buys The Walking Dead trades even though he has all the original comics.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi frequently room together at Angouleme under the names “Rene” and “Albert.”
