Daken: Dark Wolverine #9.1 Review

Tagged with: daken  Dark WolverineDaken: Dark Wolverine #9.1

A new direction begins for our title character. Today I will be reviewing Daken: Dark Wolverine #9.1. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. Daken solidifies his hold on Madripoor by killing the last crime boss who resisted him. Before he dies, he insults Daken by calling him a copier. A follower of his dad. A destroyer and not a creator. To prove himself, Daken visits his dad at Avengers tower. After sneaking up on him and threatening his life, he informs Wolverine that he is disappearing for a while to start his life over. Daken then heads to Hollywood. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. This issue was so good for so many reasons. Let’s begin with all of the pages of action and suspense. Daken having the balls to attack Wolverine while surrounded by the Avengers and actually getting the drop on him was freaking awesome. The banter between Spider Man and Wolverine was hilarious and always a plus in my eyes. The humor in general this issue was top notch. Not to mention the complete personal growth that Daken finally undergoes by the end of this issue makes me really look forward to whatever is next for our favorite mohawked antagonist. A really well written story in general. The art was also brilliant once again. Those two paintings were stunning. The Avengers looked great, especially in that first splash page. Though for some reason, the Quinjet, in that first panel, looked a little bit like the Millennium Falcon from the side and Avengers Tower resembled a city on Coruscant. Maybe its just me. In any case, this is a perfect jumping on point for anyone wanting to get in on one of the best anti hero titles on the market today. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

I’m asking myself if we read the same book…

80% is the max I’d give this book, since it didn’t provide us with anything new. There was hardly any plot, the dialogue between Spidey and Logan was annyoing, the story can be summarized in 1 sentence and if there was more than 1 page of dialogie in total, then I’m already generous. Not to mention the artist drew Daken plain ugly. He didn’t even look half-Asian, which always annoys me with most artists that draw him. Cammuncoli, Choi and Deodato are the only ones that get him right.

The only plus I give the book is that they dared to include a threesome.

Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, I must disagree. Nothing new? How about a whole new direction for Daken. The plot was Daken facing his father and stepping out of his shadow. He accomplished it by breaking into Avengers Tower and literally making the greatest superhero team go chase their own tail. The banter between Spidey and Logan wasn’t annoying, it was hilarious. It was classic Spider Man humor at it’s best. I do agree on the artist and the lack of asian qualities but he really did an excellent job on everyone else and all of the backgrounds. This was a great issue, to me. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it as much as I did.

Incredible Hulk #629 Review

Tagged with: Greg Pak  Incredible HulkIncredible Hulk #629

Hulk’s Roman holiday comes to an end. Today I will be reviewing Incredible Hulk #629. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. Hulk and Red She-Hulk are battling the stone colossus created by Tyrranus. After Hulk is batted away, Red goes to him and transforms back into Betty. The two reunite and declare their love for each other. Hulk, however, instead of leaving, goes to save Rome from Tyrranus. After he smashes his toy, Tyrranus breaks Pandora’s Box and unleashes the hope entity within it. Using his wits, Banner manages to absorb the entity and save everyone. Too bad it costs him Betty who turns back into Red She-Hulk and leaves with Tyrranus. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. This was an amazing issue and a great story arc and I’m sad to see it end. We really got to see some nice Hulk smashing action in these issues as well as some good emotional storytelling. When Betty and Bruce finally got together, only to lose each other again because of the Hulk, it really makes you understand just how sad the Hulk’s life is. He can never get what he wants because the Hulk, in one way or another, will be there to take it away from him. Story of his life, but I digress. Back to this issue. The action was once again hot and heavy. I love Cho and his sarcastic witticisms. I thought the way Banner dealt with the Hope entity was pretty cool. Does that mean the entity is now part of the Hulk? Is Hulk now the beacon of Hope? Will that be used to beat the Worthy in Fear Itself? (Hope does beat Fear every time) Once again, the art was excellent. Lots of big panels and huge, in your face, action scenes. (Still not happy with Hulk’s face though. We really need to improve on that.) Also, the stone colossus looked pretty cool too. A great issue in general. Keep up the great work. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

Green Arrow #12 Review

Tagged with: Brightest Day  Diogenes Neves  Green Arrow Blog  JT Krul  Swamp Thing  Vicente CifuentesGreen Arrow #12Wait… I thought this fight ended?

Etrigan has been defeated, but the battle for the forest isn’t over yet, and its left to Swamp Thing vs his evil Avatar to finish the battle. Meanwhile, Jason Blood retakes Etrigan unto his soul, Ollie reassures Galahad that its the heart of the knight that matters, and then finds his place back on the streets of Star City… his forest, as he calls it.

This issue was lackluster at best. The idea that the fight actually wasn’t over is kind of ridiculous, and actually had me rolling me eyes as the issue began (especially given that it had apparently ended in a fairly solid fashion last issue). That said, I was sort of pleased that the finale of the fight was actually shown in the series that has focused on it the most, even if the idea behind it was never my favorite one to begin with. Aside from this dual edged focus of the issue, the end of it all was quite good. Taking us back into the city with Ollie newly confident in his place within it is a nice way to usher in the future of the series. I just hope Krul will be able to recover from the poor story presented us in the last 5 issues, and push us forward into the future with the same excitement he came onto the title with back in Green Arrow #31, during the Fall of Green Arrow.

The artwork is again fairly consistent, though the early parts of the issue provided both good and bad renderings of our Emerald Archer. The panel at the beginning with the angle of his bow looked like he was holding a stick, and it actually bothered me, but the very next page, we see him with his bow on his back, and he looks almost iconic again. Aside from that, however, the artwork was on par with the rest of the series thus far, and even that was just sort of a nit pick on my end.

Bottom line, I am really glad that Brightest Day is over and that we can now move on to the kind of story Green Arrow deserves. Here’s hoping this series’ future is brighter than Brightest Day.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsThe conclusion promises at least a more familiar future for the series. The fight wasn't quite over, apparently. Rating70%

The Walking Dead #85 Review

Tagged with: Robert Kirkman  The Walking DeadThe Walking Dead #85

Beginning with this month’s dramatic issue of The Walking Dead, I will be taking over the reigns to our site’s comic review coverage from long time writer, Geoff Arbuckle. I hope that I will be able to bring the same scope and thought that he has proven successful for so long, and that you, our readers, will bear with us as we make this authorial change with this month’s issue.

Following the horrific events of No Way Out, Carl is seemingly recovering, and the community is in a state of disarray. But the stand off in the last issue has given Rick a much needed realization, and it promises to be one that will change the series for at least some time to come.

But Rick isn’t doing this alone. Contrary to Geoff’s suspicions presented in his review of the last issue, Rick has brought the entire community in to work together to make their home more secure, seemingly sidestepping the corruption that we saw in the Governor. And with the new plans being set up as a team effort, it will be interesting to see where the series goes from here, as the group attempts to rebuild civilization with the roamers now being considered little more than a periodic nuisance.

As a long time fan of the undead, I look at his issue in a way I’m not sure others will. It is a very interesting middle ground that we’ve never really seen before, and something Kirkman has pleasantly surprised me with time and again is his ability to revolutionize a genre so widely saturated. This middle ground that is being presented seems to be the imagined turn around that we were always left to ponder about in films that take place in the post-Zombie Apocalypse time frame when civilization has learned to deal with the undead (such as George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead). In such presentations we see civilized communities that have made due and rebuilt. Here, we seem to be on the precipice of seeing such come to fruition. And that makes me excited, not only as a reader of the series, but as the fan of the genre that I have been for so many years.

As for the immediate future of the series, I’m excited to see how Carl comes out of this. With the conclusion of this issue, I’m left thinking this could still go either way. He could live… he could die. Given his wound, he could live and be left without a memory, which could make things harder for Rick than if he were to die. Or he could never come to and simply become an anchor for Rick in the issues to come, that could lead to despair in the end. It is clearly an emotional time for our characters, and I can’t wait to see where things go from here.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsWe seem to be entering an interesting time in the series, full of things typically unseen anywhere else in the undead genre. It seemed to be much of a stepping stone issue, though such things are needed at times. Rating85%
