Secret Avengers #12.1 Review

Tagged with: Avengers  Marvel.1  Nick Spencer  Secret AvengersSecret Avengers #12.1

There’s no time to mourn for Ed Brubaker’s passing on Secret Avengers…  Nick Spencer’s era has already begun!  Released on the same day as Secret Avengers #12, Marvel wastes no time getting Nick Spencer going.  I’m guessing it’s because they need to get tied into Fear Itself, but I’m not complaining.  I’m glad I didn’t have to wait a whole month to see what he was going to bring to the table!

There’s a little bit of a crisis going on in the supervillain world.  Every gang has had a rat selling secrets to the government.  I don’t think that surprised anyone, but the worst thing in the world for those rats has happened…  Someone has stolen that information and released it to the press.  Names of over 400 finks has been spilled.  Villains like Mr. Negative wastes no time in exacting his swift punishment on his very own squealer.  So, Steve Rogers instructs his Secret Avengers that, while it sucks that anyone is going to die over stolen info, they are going to save one single guy.  The clock is ticking and he wants to rest at night knowing he got this guy, no matter how the world may view them.  He tells his team who they are getting – an A.I.M. informant.  When they get to him, they realize something they had no idea would be the case…  He wasn’t actually an A.I.M. employee, he was just a cover for the real employee, his wife.  When Steve’s team is too late to save her, he pays a visit to a man dressed as U.S. Agent who was behind the theft and release of the info all along.

I’ve not been a gigantic fan or hater of the Marvel.1 stuff either way.  I can say that I really liked this story.  Nick Spencer’s a good storyteller.  I’ve caught up with his breakout hit Morning Glories and I liked what he gave me.  I think he’s going to be fun to watch over the next few issues of this series because I think the guy can really tell an interesting story.  He excels at character.  In this one, he gives us a look at a Steve Rogers who is putting aside his feelings about the people who cowardly sells out their employees and end up taking no heat for the wrongs they’ve done in order to defend the idea that the government has always needed this particular form of scum to keep people safe.  All he wants is to save one scientist from A.I.M., but instead he didn’t know he needed to find and protect the poor guy’s wife.  I was actually surprised how much the climax of this issue affected me.  It was really well written.

From the art side, Scot Eaton’s stuff is really, really good.  This series has, for over a year now, basked in the glow of excellent art.  Eaton’s characters are scary, tough, sexy, and exciting to watch.  As much as I miss Brubaker/Deodato/Conrad on this series already, I have to say I didn’t have much time to think about that at all with Spencer and Eaton.

Yes, boys and girls…  I think these next three months are going to be quite kind to these Secret Avengers!

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsEaton's art is really nice. I could stare at his panels for hours. Spencer's story was suprisingly impactful for a .1 issue and proves he can handle this team and disappoint none.None. Yeah, I'm about to give a perfect score to a .1 issue. How 'bout them apples? I liked the issue ok, especially seeing who I THOUGHT was John Walker (USAgent), but I do not like the lineup of this Avengers.  Minor qualm, as the issue itself had a good, real-world relevent story.  Dunno if I’d give it a 100%, but it was good.
