Journey Into Mystery #623 Review

Tagged with: Fear Itself  Journey Into Mystery  Kieron Gillen  ThorJourney Into Mystery #623

Of all people to think Odin is doing the wrong thing by having stoking the fires of a war that will completely ravage Earth, it’s Loki.  Considering his past, Loki’s going to have some rough times to get anyone to listen to him and joining with him to make things right in Kieron Gillen’s Journey Into Mystery #623.

Thor is imprisoned for speaking out against his father.  Loki and Volstagg agree that things don’t seem right with Odin’s plan to sacrifice Midgard to stop the Serpent.  Loki sets out to get some answers about who the Serpent is and why Odin reacts to him the way he does.  Loki dives to the root of the World Tree to speak with some oracles.  When he returns, he is shedding tears, but knows now what he must do.  He visits Thor and asks for advice.  Knowing that Thor would stop something bad from happening and he’d also make sure that if something bad was prevented making something even worse happen he’d do what ever it took to prevent the worse thing from going down, Loki frees a hel wolf to travel to Hel to put some plans into motion.

Kieron Gillen is an incredibly talented writer.  His work with Thor and the supporting characters is top notch.  Reading a Gillen written story about Asgardians is like sipping a really fine vodka.  It’s smooth and intoxicating.  In this story, we don’t know everything that Loki is doing or planning, but it’s so damn interesting that I want to keep reading.  When the last page comes and goes, you almost feel sad.  On top of all that, Gillen is getting to craft Loki in a brand new way.  He’s young and is different than before, but there’s still that little glint of mischief.  If you’ve read Thor for at least a little while, you know Loki pretty well.  This new Loki is such a mystery and it’s great to see it all play out.

Then, you have Doug Braithwaite’s gorgeous art.  There are times when read a comic and the art can be bad.  Sometimes it’s good but you have to be reminded who it is that did it.  Other times, an artist gets launched into a fantastic career through his/her work on a particularly popular title, or through paying dues until the big breakout opportunity comes knocking.  Braithwaite’s art surpasses all these different situations.  This is a case when an artist’s style so perfectly fits the title that it feels real.  There’s a real serendipity when you get something like this.  It feels so perfect that it’s as if these tales were drawn centuries ago and is the definitive style of the visual story.

Loki’s quest is underway and, dammit, this series is really moving now.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsAbsolutely gorgeous art from Braithwaite and Gillen's story is engaging and intriguing.People expecting Thor to walk around knocking out giants or smashing stuff with Mjolnir aren't reading the right book. Rating95%
