Ultimate Avengers Vs. New Ultimates #4 Review

Tagged with: Avengers  Ultimate Marvel  UltimatesUltimate Avengers Vs. New Ultimates #4

Talk about it hitting the fan…  That’s exactly what happens in Ultimates Avengers Vs. New Ultimates #4.

Spider-Man has taken a shot to save Captain America.  The shooter was the Punisher and he’s not taking it well.  Realizing he’s shot an innocent, and a young man no less, he begs to be punished the way he would punish criminals, but he’s rounded up by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.  The rest of Fury’s team is chased and rounded up and captured, but before the chaos comes to an end, Carol Danvers is struck by a car and left in a coma with probable brain damage.  In the wake of everything that’s happened, Gregory Stark is elevated to the interim Director role at S.H.I.E.L.D.  The Ultimates are left wonder what will happen next with Fury’s Avengers likely to be let off since they were only following Fury’s orders and unaware of his double dealing.  Black Widow doesn’t believe Fury is truly guilty and we learn that he was definitely set up by someone close to both teams and is dealt with in a very harsh fashion.

This issue definitely recaptures a lot of what the Ultimates were always about and what the Ultimate Avengers should have always been about.  It’s good, deep storytelling that leaves you wanting more.  Mark Millar is dealing with situations in a very chaotic, but compelling way.  While characters are suffering horrible fates, it’s not as wham bam as Ultimatum.  It’s there as part of the story and not just there for shock value.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of shock in this issue.  Punisher’s desperation to be judged on the spot for shooting Spider-Man was almost as human as it was creepy.  The New Ultimates not passing judgment on Fury’s team showed a lot of character from people who maybe wouldn’t necessarily go to bat for people on the wrong side of an issue.  Carol Danvers’ run in with a car came out of nowhere causing me to actually gasp as it went down.  These were all great examples of how shock can be good for a story and not just there for frivolous reasons or to drive sales.  This is what storytelling should be.

Now, Gregory Stark’s involvement with everything came as little surprise, but I was actually satisfied to be justified in my original opinion of him.  He’s a turd and someone I wouldn’t trust a couple pennies and my Subway sandwich with.  Here’s another example of how good storytelling can even make something you expected to see pay off in a satisfying way.  You don’t have to be shocked or surprised by anything if the pieces were put in place properly.

In short, this is a pretty damn good comic.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsThis is storytelling done in all the right ways. Millar and Yu give us gritty drama that leaves you wondering what the heck is going to happen now.Very little to complain about. There was one scene that lands some characters in the drink that was a bit hard to follow, but overall a pretty solid issue in every way. Rating95%
