Avengers Academy #14 Review

Avengers Academy vs. The Sinister Six!

While the more experienced Avengers are in Italy dealing with an erupting Mt. Etna, Tigra and the students learn of Electro breaking into a French lab.  When they arrive, they free the hostages, but they soon learn that Electro isn’t alone, the entire Sinister Six is there!  While the muscle of the villainous team work on the young heroes, Doctor Octopus works to steal a device that has a self-sustaining power source.  The team barely escapes before an explosion takes out the lab.  The lead inspector of the French police gives Hank Pym a stern lecture about his irresponsible actions of leaving these kids to take care of the problem.  While Avengers Academy doesn’t get the victory they need for a morale boost, Pym gets a huge jolt as far as his perception of the Academy’s effectiveness leading him to promise even more training to get the kids ready for their futures.

While this series is usually heavier on character development, this one puts that to the side to deliver more action.  On paper, it would seem as though the students would be able to put up a challenge against the Sinister Six, but the lack of experience hurts them so badly that they have to accept a crushing defeat.  What’s interesting is that while this issue is heavier on action, there is still an undertone of development for these characters and that’s why I consider Christos Gage to be one of Marvel’s brightest and most talented writers.

If there was one really cool moment in this issue, I would have to say it was Reptil going up against the Rhino.  I mean, how freakin’ cool is it to see the Rhino and a triceratops running full speed at each other?  I’m betting Sean Chen saw that in the script and nearly wet himself.    It’s these little things like this that makes the series so enjoyable.  Whether it is a tender moment between Mettle and Hazmat, a surprisingly touching scene with Taskmaster, or a badass dinosaur fight, the series is just fun.

Speaking of Sean Chen, I like this guy’s art and always have.  He’s definitely a student of the style of comics I grew up with.  He’s got a nice, even, and pretty way about his frames that I just enjoy.  All these things add up to a really fun comic that I’m so glad is getting the credit it deserves.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsA lot of fun to read with nice solid art that's also fun to look at.While the action is fun, there wasn't quite the same focus on character. Rating95%
