Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt #1 Review

Tagged with: Avengers Initiative  Fear Itself  Fear Itself Youth in RevoltFear Itself: Youth in Revolt #1

Remember some of those lesser known characters that starred in the series Avengers The Initiative?  I really loved that series, and found the stories of these characters to be quite endearing, thanks to Christos Gage.  Well, whether those characters like it or not, Steve Rogers has activated the Initiative in the wake of the events in Fear Itself.

As Prodigy, Ritchie Gilmore has experienced some pretty good highs and some really low lows in his superhero career.  During the Superhero Civil War, he went toe to toe with Iron Man before being imprisoned for not registering with the government.  Now, he has the satisfaction of decommissioning some of the files from the Superhero Registration Act.  He gets a message from Commander Steve Rogers asking him to lead a new version of the Initiative, one that would not require anyone to remain in the team beyond the current call to action.  Many of the former Initiative members arrive to help calm the people looting and rioting on the streets.  It’s a happy reunion for some, and for others, it brings up some bad memories.  When the groups head out to start calming the public, Tarene (also known as Thor Girl) gets attacked for carrying a hammer.  When people try to shoot her, she deflects the bullets naturally and injures a police officer.  She is surrounded by more police looking to take her in as an enemy.

I’m not sure how the casual reader will take to this series.  Some might like the story of these lesser known characters .  However, most will likely wonder who the heck these characters are and what the connection to each other is.  Without a doubt, this is targeting the Avengers the Initiative crowd.  Me?  I was excited to see these characters get their shot in a Fear Itself tie in.  These aren’t seasoned pros.  Some have more experienced than others, but none of these characters are perfect.  They are more likely to make a mistake, or not know how to handle a situation.  I would defend these characters by saying that while they aren’t Spider-Man or Iron Man or Hulk, who each have experienced different situations and know how to handle them, these characters are much more like you and me.  They are young and easier to relate to than the major stars of the Marvel Universe.  Without a doubt, if you can get into this series, you will find a lot of new characters to root for and feel comfortable with them.

Sean McKeever and Mike Norton handles the issue very well.  McKeever is a talented writer when it comes to characters like these.  He has some experience already with a few of these characters from the Young Allies.  He does a really nice job of quickly acquainting new readers to these characters without bogging down the issue.  Norton’s art is nice and consistent throughout the book.  He has a quality in his art that keeps the characters young and fresh.  Some of his panels and pages are very nice.

Overall, this first issue gets things rolling nicely.  These tie ins for Fear Itself have been a lot of fun to read so far and helps give that whole scope as to what these other characters in the Marvel Universe are doing while all this crazy stuff is going down.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsMcKeever and Norton provide a fresh comic that's as fun to read as it is nice to look at.I'm not sure how many casual readers will grab hold of these characters off the bat, especially since these characters are relatively unknowns. Rating85%
