The Legion Of Super-Heroes #13 Review

Tagged with: Legion of Super Heroes  Legion of Super Villains  Paul Levitz  Timber Wolf

The war between the LSH and the LSV continues in “False Hopes,” as Paul Levitz continues his tale of Saturn Queen and her weird blue flame that is guiding her in major destruction. Most of the action takes place on Colu, as even Element Lad’s transmutation powers are having problems countering Immortus’ seemingly endless regeneration, which is a fairly terrifying sign. There’s a lot of fighting, including some better screen time finally for some of the lesser seen Legionnaires, like Polar Boy and Quislet.

As the fight rages on, Hunter drops Timber Wolf for just long enough to sneak up on Earth-Man and offer him a place with the new LSV, saying Saturn Queen thought he’d fit in well after peering inside his mind. Earth-Man doesn’t immediately accept, but he doesn’t fight Hunter, either. Saturn Queen summons this blue entity, which looks a lot more human now, and it says it will help them find this mysterious (and thus far unidentified) “World of the Wise.” Basically, there are a lot small skirmishes, and the LSV all escape but Immortus, who seems like he’s finally meeting his match with Ultra Boy and Wildfire. There’s a lot of planning and trying to figure out what the LSV is up to, but no decisive combat.

Towards the end, we finally hear more about the ever enigmatic Professor Harmonia Li. Dream Girl says she has seen the Professor holding hands with Thom (Star Boy) in space with energies all around them. Li thinks she knows what this means, but says they need to stop Thom’s treatment, draining the multiversal energy from him. Next up, to follow “False Hopes” is “False Dreams” which makes me wonder if someone is messing with Dream Girl’s powers.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

I am glad we got to see more of Tellus, Quislet, and Polar Boy. We get a few more hints about Harmonia, who I admit both continues to intrigue me and I have no idea what to make of. There’s some good action, and the Legion is trying to regroup and see what to do next. The blue flame is an interesting mystery. It certainly wants “all galactic civilization to fall.” I wonder, could this be some version of Krona? We also don’t yet know where the “World of the Wise” is. With some of the more obvious guesses made over time, I’ll offer a new one: Azarath, home of Raven of the Teen Titans? I don’t think we’ve ever seen it in the 31st Century. Just a thought.

The pace seems to be a bit slow, but it’s being managed well. I’m honestly not sure if it’s too slow, or if it’s just that I really want to see what happens next. This is a major story with a lot of possibilities, and Levitz is handling it well.
