Sigil #3 Review

Tagged with: Crossgen Comics  SigilSigil #3

It’s time for Samantha Rey to show what she’s made of in Sigil #3 by Mike Carey and Leonard Kirk.

Samantha has returned to the high seas.  She climbs aboard Captain October’s ship to free the imprisoned crew of the El Cazador and deal with the villainous pirate October herself.  Using her power more confidently, she frees El Cazador’s crew and puts a beating on October fairly easily.  Sam then guides El Cazador to the site of a fabled booty.  Unfortunately, there is something else hidden with the treasure – an item  of unspeakable power that October is willing to do anything to obtain.

This issue is a definite improvement over the previous.  While the last issue moved so fast that it was hard to get your bearings, this issue is more evenly paced and gives some explanation of things going on around Sam.  We find that she wasn’t bestowed the power of the Sigil.  She was born with it and no one knows exactly what that means in the grand scheme of things.  She meets a mentor that she can speak to through a locket that belonged to her mother.  October has a set of tarot cards that serves a similar function.  This is an obvious allusion to the First, or, at least, the beings that represent Marvel’s version of the First.  As a long time Crossgen fan, I definitely appreciate getting to see some explanation that bring those godlike beings into play.

Overall, this is a much smoother book and one that is a lot more fun and easier to read.  I know Carey had it in him from being aware of other works he’s done, but I was worried that this story was going to get too deep for its own good.  Especially considering I feel this book’s audience is probably younger than the average comic reader, I didn’t want to see the story get too mired in this really complicated plot that jumps from one place and time to the next.

To wrap up, this book found its legs to be fun and exciting.  Along with Kirk’s superb art, this series is starting to get back to the ideals that made the old Crossgen books so much more fun to read than almost anything else out there.
