Secret Avengers #12 Review

Tagged with: Avengers  Secret Avengers  Steve RogersSecret Avengers #12

It’s happy trails for Ed Brubaker…  Did he leave on a high note?

Steve Rogers and his Secret Avengers are trying to get to the bottom of John Steele’s sudden turn from patriot to terrorist.  In the previous issue, they were using a machine to access his memories to find the exact moment in which he lost his way.  Unfortunately he’s escaped from the machine and is planning his escape.  The combination of the drugs administered by Hank McCoy, and the trickiness of the Prince of Orphans, Steele is overpowered and put back in the machine.  With the help of Rogers, Steele finally gets back the pieces of memory that was lost when he was captured by Thorndrake, the head of the Shadow Council.  Finally free from the Council’s manipulations, Rogers offers Steele a chance to do something good once again…

While these final two issues of Brubaker’s run weren’t at the level the two main arcs in his run, I’m actually very glad there wasn’t some huge finale because what we really needed was Brubaker finishing the threads and stories Brubaker started.  He left quietly with nothing really left wide open.  The Shadow Council is still a little bit of a mystery, but one that cannot be handled later or elsewhere.  It was nicely wrapped.  With this issue, it serves as just that, a way to wrap up John Steele’s story.  You could say he was possessed or mind controlled, but we’re left with the idea that he’s free and isn’t sure what to do with his life now.  The hint was definitely dropped that he’s going to get to be a secret Secret Avenger, but how much will Nick Spencer or Warren Ellis delve into that?

Will Conrad and Mike Deodato give us the art we’ve come to expect in this series.  The flow from one style to the other is rather seemless.  They had to love what they got to work with too – Nazis, World War II setting, The Beast, a giant Wyrm Monster, a guy who can turn into mist, and two super soldiers duking it out.  I’m willing to bet this series was a complete joy to work on.

The Brubaker chapter of Secret Avengers comes to a nice ending.  Now, bring on the Nick Spencer and Scot Eaton era!

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsNicely understated with some beautiful artwork from the Conrad/Deodato team. It's nice to have a neat bow tying Bru's plotlines together.Understated plot might be a problem for some, but this should appeal to all those who are fans of Brubaker's style of storytelling.
