Avengers #12.1 Review

Tagged with: Avengers  Brian Michael Bendis  Bryan Hitch  Marvel.1Avengers #12.1

Bryan Hitch joins Brian Michael Bendis for a special issue of Avengers!  So, how did it go?  Keep readin’ and you’ll find out!

On a special mission for S.W.O.R.D., Spider-Woman stumbles upon a very interesting sight.  She’s not alone though.  A ton of villains, all from the Intelligencia, finds her and takes her hostage.  Back in New York, Abigail Brand is meeting with the Avengers to get their help in finding Spider-Woman.  Steve Rogers isn’t exactly happy to hear about this S.W.O.R.D. group for the first time (like Mr. SECRET Avenger has much room to talk!), and is even a tad more frustrated when he learns that the Beast is also an agent of S.W.O.R.D.  He gets back to the task at hand and forms a special team of mixed Avengers who each has a talent that can help track Spider-Woman.  Wolverine and Iron Man get a good trace of where she’s been taken.  In the secret Intelligencia camp, Spider-Woman wakes up nude (what’s with the nudity this week, Marvel?).  She learns from the Mad Thinker and Wizard that she found a Spaceknight.  The Intelligencia pokes and prods at the Spaceknight, but are interrupted by the Avengers busting in to save Spider-Woman.  Right in the middle of the fight, the Spaceknight comes alive and morphs into a brand new Ultron!  Ultron gets away without a trace and Tony Stark knows that this is going to lead to a horrific war that we saw during the very first arc of this series.

If you saw my Secret Avengers #12.1 review, you probably saw my intense surprise of how good that story was.  I have to say, this one was just as exciting as that one.  Bendis gets to work from several angles on this issue.  First, he’s got a gaggle of bad guys from the Intelligencia.  Next, he has S.W.O.R.D. stuff.  Then, Steve Rogers is freaking out over secret gangs.  Lastly, two aspects really hooked me – a SPACEKNIGHT and freakin’ ULTRON!  This was just a fun story.  I didn’t get a weird Marvel.1 feel to it that I’ve gotten from the .1 issue of other series.  This issue teased us for the next big Avengers thing after Fear Itself and I’m loving it.

Also, I got someone other than John Romita Jr. doing art on this series.  Holy crap, what an upgrade with Bryan Hitch.  Every frame on every page was amazing.  He really took me back to those early Ultimates days with cinematic points of view and angles.  Plus, there’s something Hitch does that can be a real turn off for me from a lot of artists…  Each of his characters have their own distinct look.  A lot of artists that came along in the last 20 years or so often drew female characters, in particular, the exact same way with a different hairstyle.  This was never really a problem for male characters, but it was really common for women.  Look at each female character in this issue (I point this out because there are a ton of them in this issue).  They each look like real people with real physical characteristics that are different from one character to the next.  One of my biggest critiques of JRJR’s art in the regular issues of this series is that, to the exception of Medusa, female characters are either so poorly drawn they are ugly, or they look like men.  Not here, and that just makes me happy.

I got two Marvel.1 issues this week and I have to say both of them knocked it so far out of the park that you better test these issues for steroids.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsBendis really gave us a fun and exciting story involving two of my most favorite things in all my years of comic reading. Hitch's art is so awesome it nearly made my eyeballs turn to goo and drip out of my face holes.Holy cow... Another perfect for the .1 comics! What's going on around here?!? Rating100%
