Suicide Girls #1 Review

Tagged with: IDW  Steve Niles  Suicide GirlsSuicide Girls #1

The popular web site gets a book all it’s own from the strange mind of Steve Niles. Today I will be reviewing Suicide Girls #1. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. A group of militaristic females calling themselves the Suicide Girls break a woman out of a “Way of Life” prison. The people behind the prison control the media and put their enemies into these “rehab” centers to eliminate them. This woman, named Frank, snuck into the prison to see if she could find out information about Xenia, her college roommate who disappeared when she found out some secret information about “Way of Life”. Frank agrees to join the Suicide Girls if they agree to help Frank take out the leader of “Way of Life”. Sana, the leader of the Girls agrees. Sana, however, has an ulterior motive. Xenia, the missing girl, happens to be her little sister. Also, “Way of Life” is tracking Frank through a tracker implanted on her neck that she is unaware of, and now they tracked her to the Suicide Girl’s hideout. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. When I first saw this book, I wasn’t that crazed over it. However, I am a fan of tattoos and naked chicks. I have seen the web site and do find many of the women there attractive. Therefore I decided to pick up this issue. I was pleasantly surprised. Steve Niles, of 30 Days of Night fame, does an excellent job of pacing this book. The characters are all fresh and interesting. The story isn’t too overwhelming. There is some nice action and a decent surprise twist at the end. All excellent qualities for a first issue. That’s not what got me hooked though. What really caught my eye was the art. The tattoos in particular. Now tattoos on characters in comics is not a rarity. What is rare, however, is detailed color tattoos on characters. Sana’s work was very well done. All of the girl’s work was. The art in general is very nice. Nice big bold colors but with a surprising amount of details. Frank’s back piercings/sword hilt was an awesome touch too. And the nudity is tasteful as well. This book reminds me of the Dirty Dozen. That is, if the Dozen were a bunch of hot, pierced, tattooed bad ass women. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes fast paced action comics with women as main characters. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
