Astonishing X-Men #37 Review

Tagged with: Astonishing X-MenAstonishing X-Men #37

It’s Godzirra. Run. Run. Godzirra. Today I will be reviewing Astonishing  X-Men #37. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. Armor’s mother and brother are killed and Armor flies to Tokyo to attend their funeral. She is accompanied by Cyclops, Emma, and Wolverine. Meanwhile, Mentallo takes over Monster Island and orders Fin Fang Foom to attack Tokyo so he can blackmail Roxxon. The X-Men are battling Fin Fang Foom but are getting their butt handed to them when Armor shows up to help them. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. Let me be honest here. I normally do not review this book because it really pisses me off. For a title that started off so strong with the Joss Whedon/John Cassaday run, this title has gone downhill ever since. I had great hopes for Warren Ellis but he really dropped the ball with his nonsensical writing. The current writer, Daniel Way, knows his way around a mutant and has amazing ability to write good, humorous tales. This current story is all right but its nothing spectacular. I enjoyed the focus on Armor and the internal struggle she faced before choosing to side with her adopted mutant family instead of her real one. There were a few brief but failed attempts at humor and sarcasm. I find the entire premise kind of cliche. (Reminds me of a Godzilla movie or ten) Still, it wasn’t completely unreadable. The art was also so-so. Nothing too spectacular but nothing that makes you want to claw your eyes out in disgust. I found that Tokyo was drawn very nicely. Very detailed. Fin Fang Foom was also drawn pretty well. The part that was very off for me were the actual X-Men. They looked very strange and simple. Not a lot of good body work. Faces looked strange as well. Still, the Wolverine vs Fin Fang Foom battle was done very well. The splash with him jumping with his claws out and the buildings in the background was cool. Armor was drawn quite well too. I hope that this arc is over soon and this book starts coming out on a more regular basis as delays have really made me not care about this book more and more. This is really a shame because Armor has great potential and this is the only title she is utilized in. We’ll see. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

Goes w/out saying the book is in decline since the Joss Whedon/John Cassaday run. I still think it’s an interesting title and it obviously seems to be the book that features Armor now. And that’s a good thing. She’s a great character and deserves the ink.

Thanks for the comment Tommy. I agree. If used properly, Armor has good potential. Her mutant ability is pretty cool and the mentor/protege aspect between her and Wolverine can definitely be played up for some good future stories.
