New Mutants #25 Review

Tagged with: New MutantsNew Mutants #25

The next phase in the evolution of the New Mutants begins here. Today I will be reviewing New Mutants #25. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. The New Mutants, along with Wolverine and Colossus, attack an auto plant to destroy a piece of Nimrod technology that is trying to rebuild itself. After a quick battle against automated automobiles, the mutants are victorious. Meanwhile, Cyclops places Illyana under house arrest for almost destroying reality during the New Mutant’s last mission in Limbo. She accepts without a fight. Dani visits Sam who is leaving the team to recuperate from his Limbo and Age of X experiences. Later, Cyclops, to the surprise of Dani, assigns her as the new team leader and tasks her with tying up some loose ends from previous X-Men missions. The first of which is finding and retrieving Nate Grey AKA X-Man. Too bad he is tied to a machine, in the clutches of the Sugar Man. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. Wow. Now that was a full issue. Lots of things get addressed and touched upon. We tie up a bunch of loose ends as well as open the door to the future of this team. The respect that the writer is showing Dani is really high. Let’s face it. Even for a mutant with no powers, Dani is an expert tactician and combat fighter. Not the most indestructible of leaders but definitely someone worthy of leading. All in all, there were a lot of different topics touched upon. Illyana’s punishment was just and necessary, I think. She is, in some ways, just as powerful as Legion and needs to be monitored. I’m sure Marvel will find some big thing for her in the future to be a villain of. I love the sarcasm that is scattered throughout the book. Makes reading that much more enjoyable. I can’t wait to see Nate Grey back in the pages of a Marvel comic. How he hasn’t blasted the Sugar Man by now is beyond me, but I guess if he did, then we wouldn’t be having this upcoming arc. Should be interesting. Sugar Man has potential as a good villain but was never fully utilized in the past. The writers need to expand his power set if they plan on letting him physically take on the team. I’m sure it will be great. The art was nothing to scoff at either. Lots of big splashes including that amazing two pager with all of the X powerhouses ready to decimate Illyana if she even thinks of resisting. Plus that gate-fold cover is stunning. A great book. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
