Zatanna #13 Review

Tagged with: Brother Night  Paul Dini  ZatannaZatanna #13

“The Cat with the Crystal Ball Eye” continues the tale of Zatanna clashing with Brother Night, her foe from the first arc of this solo book. In another interesting Dini creation, Zee is visited by a black cat with an eye symbol in its fur that she must both feed and gaze into the strange eye of to gain warning of the future. Zee’s images are mostly about Brother Night, and a bit about the Spectre.

Brother Night is amassing an army of followers in prison, and the warden quite wisely wants no part of this. He’s trying to get Night transferred to any of the places that can deal with him better (Belle Reeve, Arkahm, the Slab), but the paperwork takes too long and Night escapes, despite the best efforts of Zee’s police contact Detective Colton. Night drops hints about Colton’s past and uses his power to escape and start reclaiming his possessions.

Zee has a very inconclusive meeting with the Spectre, who says he has no quarrel with her, despite what the cat’s visions seemed to show. Mind you, he’s his usual charming self, and Zee leaves far from pleased with him. Colton visits a mental institution, and we learn that his mother carved crosses all over both of them when he was born, and that Night is apparently his father. What all this will come to mean we’ll have to find out next issue.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

Dini has created a nice little world for Zatanna. Her supporting cast work, and continue to be intriguing. There’s a great little dream sequence at the start of this issue, which is amusing, and we see more of Zee’s assistant Mikey, both in the dream and around the cat. The cat, too, is an interesting idea, a nice blending of mystic portents of doom and mundane demands (food and belly rubs).

I’m not sure how I feel about the reveal of Colton’s past. I like the character, and I don’t want him to just vanish after Night is dealt with.

Night seems to have gained a lot of power since his last defeat, and I’m not sure where it came from. I’m hoping when Zee beats him again, he stays defeated for longer this time.
