Astonishing X-Men #38 Review

Tagged with: Astonishing X-MenAstonishing X-Men #38

Those evil sleazoids from space are back to cause some more trouble for our favorite mutants. Today I will be reviewing Astonishing  X-Men #38. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. While half the team is in Japan, the other half is visited by Beast who asks them for help. It seems that Abigail Brand is stuck on a space station by a pack of Brood warriors and a Brood queen. Storm, Colossus and Kitty Pryde travel with Beast to S.W.O.R.D. headquarters to hook up with Lockheed and head of to the space station. When they arrive, they find agent Brand and manage to rescue her, some other scientists, and some machinery that would make it possible to extract a brood egg from a host without killing the host. This would allow the brood to reproduce with a single host multiple times. Not good for us humans. So as they leave the space station, Beast orders it to be blown up. Too bad agent Brand is already Brood and calls off the order. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. Art. From the amazing image on the cover, you would expect the interiors to be great too, right? Well I’m sorry to say you would be sadly disappointed. While not completely disgusting, the X-Men look terrible. Beast is completely off. His face, hair and jaws look really strange. Kitty and Colossus look totally weird as well. Their faces and bodies look strange. In fact, most of the human faces appear mannequiny. Very stiff. Also, all of their necks seem to have disappeared. The Brood look all right but nothing spectacular. The final splash of Brood Brand was pretty cool though. As for the story, it was all right as well. Not very original, but how many times can you play the “already a brood” card before it becomes expected. The action was nicely done. I also really enjoyed the exchange between Kitty and Lockheed. That kind of saved the issue in it’s lighthearted nature. I like Lockheed but I always liked him as a Dragon, and not an agent of S.W.O.R.D. That’s just getting ridiculous. Still, I think I like this story arc a bit more than the Japan story arc. We’ll see which one is better when they both are over. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
