X-Men Giant Size#1 Review

Tagged with: X-MenX-Men Giant Size#1

A blast from the past leads to a new story arc. Today I will be reviewing X-Men Giant Size#1. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. The Neo decide to attack Utopia and are slowly winning the battle. Their issue us that the Neo are dying out and no new Neo are being born, while new mutant births are starting to occur. It seems that M-Day affected the Neo as well. Cyclops is fighting when suddenly he has a seizure. He flashes back to a fight many years ago with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. It was a battle set up by Magneto to expose the X-Men to the Sentinels for the first time. The X-Men manage to escape and return to Xavier’s. While Cyclops and Xavier argue, creatures mysteriously appear in front of them. They name themselves as the Evolutionaries and their purpose is the survival of homo superior. Scott then wakes from his flashback and finds the Evolutionaries are back. Their first action is the complete and total extinction of the Neo. Next, they declare that for mutants to live, all of humanity must die. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. Here we go. It’s about damn time something exciting happened in X-Men. Curse of the Mutants was pretty cool, but the five issues afterward was pure crap and a waste of space. This story actually feels like its something big and can change the landscape of mutantdom. I love the Evolutionaries and their cold matter of fact demeanor. I’m curious to see how they are so powerful and what their motives are. Wiping out the Neo is a pretty big thing too. I’m excited to see how the X-Men deal with this new threat. I was also extremely happy with the art in this issue as well. There were so many beautiful splash images and action sequences. Both past and present artists did an excellent job capturing the x-men in all of their glory. I especially liked the last page mirror image showing the past and present of the X-Men. It’s nice to see that the team’s dynamics haven’t changed that much in over 50 years. We replaced one telepath with another and one agile powerhouse with a super vicious and violent force of nature. Plus Angel changed his wings. Personally, I think the present five would hand the past five their ass in a fight, though. Let’s hope the pace and excitement transfers to the regular series in a similar fashion. This issue rocked. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
