New Avengers #12 Review

Mockingbird’s life hangs by a thread!  Hawkeye wants vengeance!  Who is this Captain America in 1959?  The Red Skull was an imposter?  Is Victoria Hand as trustworthy as we hoped?  It’s a pretty busy start and finish in the newest issue of New Avengers by Brian Michael Bendis, Howard Chaykin and Mike Deodato, but what about the middle?

The Avengers are nervously waiting outside the operating room while doctors try to save Mockingbird’s life from the bullet she got to the gut a few issues ago.  Clint, who arrived after Victoria Hand told him what happened wants everyone responsible brought to him so he can take an eye for an eye.  In the past, Nick Fury’s Avengers team is furiously trying to capture the Red Skull before he escapes.  Fury deals with the nearly indestructible Captain America impersonator.  The Skull is captured and dealt with harshly by Sabretooth.  Back in the present, Victoria hand gets a visitor at her home that brings into question exactly what angle Hand is playing.

While I will still defend this arc as a pretty decent chapter for this volume of New Avengers, this is an issue wrapped around two bombshells.  The first being how Victor Creed deals with the “Red Skull” and the second is Victoria Hand’s late night encounter.  Both of those bombshells account for about four or five pages of comic.  I will say that Bendis has me completely uncertain what Mockingbird’s fate will be.  I have a decent reason to think she could die because I really haven’t seen her much in other series around Marvel.  I also have one very strong reason for her not to die because what would be the point in bringing her back after her alleged 15-year dirt nap just to kill her again?  Even though I don’t believe she’s going to die, Bendis is definitely amping up the tension with the race to save her life.  Also, Bendis also put an edge on Hawkeye by wanting to avenge his love by any means necessary.  It’s a solid first couple pages that’s pretty intense.

While the issue doesn’t do much in the way of progression (with the five or six pages I mention above), I’m not going to fault it too much.  It’s a setup issue.  Bendis is moving the pieces into place for the payoff.  The issue wasn’t boring, but it didn’t knock my socks off either.  That’s not to say this book has no reason to exist, though I could say it would be nice to fold these events into another issue and not necessarily stretch it out to a six-part story.

The story’s strong art team of Deodato and Chaykin is still a very strong reason to check out the issue.    While the issue isn’t terribly exciting for the majority of the book, it does set up some nice tension and questions about some of the main players seen in both storylines.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsGood art and particularly strong start and finish. Not terribly exciting in the middle of the issue. It is a set up for the finale of the story, after all. Rating70%
