Batgirl #21 Review

Batgirl #21

Right off the bat, I like that this issue addressed the Grey Ghost, because he’s sort of been hanging about and being a pain for a little while now and I am ready to see how his aim is. Luckily, this issue does just that. I was impressed when Steph basically told him to step off. This shows how she has strengthened as a character and very much come into her own. She’s beginning to believe that what she’s doing is right and she’ll keep on, no matter what role he attempts to insinuate into her life.

Plot-wise, we’re still trying to figure out the ultimate goal of the Reapers and Stephanie has encountered another, who dubs herself Harmony. But there’s more working in this issue overall and I think the moments with Proxy were more important to the long-term storyline. That is, if it plays out within Batgirl. She is struggling with her condition and her lack of improvement and to boot, is having conversations with her dead brother. However, this is working really well for her character development. At the urging of Doc Thompkins, Wendy is off to Nanda Parbat, which any Bat reader will understand the significance of. I actually hope they do cover that for us. That would give this book even more depth.

Meanwhile, Batgirl is putting together some semblance of a lead on why The Client – the unknown force running the Reapers – is paying college kids to be baddies. This issue ends in an unclear way. The ambiguity – of course – compels us to read next month’s issues but definitely ups the stakes here.

As usual, I liked Batgirl a lot and appreciate the writing, the art and the entire package. I was happy to see Dustin Nguyen back on this issue; the cover is fantastic! His style on the page is honed and skillful in the grand sense; the pages depict action so well. But there were some facial close-ups that seemed a little unfinished, to me. All in all, two thumbs up as always.
