Red Robin #23 Review

Red Robin #23

The last few issues of Red Robin were subpar to what I thought were the best of this run: 6-20. That said, is it just me or is this issue… off?

For starters, the first four pages were insanely rushed and seem to be attempting to catch us up on stuff that I’m now questioning if I saw in an issue or if these were all off-page happenings. I almost wasn’t sure it mattered. Then, Tim’s run-in with Lynx (again) threw me for a loop. Did she always speak in broken English? I don’t have my old issues on hand to double check. I could let something small like that go but this issue goes on to mess with canon, in my opinion.

It appears there’s a plan in place to… wait, what’s going on? Oh, it makes little to no sense. Something about Lucius and Batman and, I kind of stopped caring. Suffice to say that there’s a cadre of bad guys headed up by Scarab and their current kill list consists of one name: Red Robin.

I also felt like Nicieza was pandering to someone who may have just picked this up for the first time; there was a lot of filling in gaps of very basic info that any even part-time Bat reader would already know. To me, that was wasted time when we could have seen something actually develop. Some semblance of a plot would have been nice.

Along with that, I want to know where Tim went and who this guy in his costume is. Because his characterization was just wrong. Totally and completely. The small-talk with Scarab, the deception of Bruce and him downplaying it… he called Lynx a “hottie”. I’m sorry but the Tim Drake I know and love just doesn’t use colloquial language like that. I don’t mind if he does, it’s just that it doesn’t seem normal.

BUT, Marcus To, props to you my man because at least the art was as good as always and the pretty pictures helped me get through this horribly boring, weak, and disappointing issue. I don’t mean to be harsh… well, yes I do. Unfortunately, this issue was an epic fail. For me, anyway.
