Batman Incorporated #5 Review

Tagged with: Batman  Batman Inc.  Batwoman  Bruce Wayne  Grant Morrison  Grant Morrison Batman  Yanick PaquettBatman Incorporated #5Bruce Wayne’s Argentinean adventure comes to a close, we meet two new Batman of Batman Inc, the history and identity of new villain Doctor Dedalus is revealed and the mystery of Leviathan, the man mentioned in Batman: The Return, continues to thicken.

Although praising the work of Morrison throughout his Batman run, even recently, I’m beginning to grow weary of the convoluted names, concepts, flashbacks, twists, turns and research that’s required of any Batman Incorporated reader. To be fair, I enjoy having to flip through previous issues and rediscover clues and hints Morrison had laid out and I enjoy his snowball effect, starting the roll of something that builds and builds without attracting much attention in the process, but this issue in particular is beginning to wear on my patience. I enjoy a smart comic and appreciate Morrison’s addiction to originality with his Batman story telling…but its starting to feel like this casserole has too many ingredients.

That being said, I’m still enjoying the story. And maybe even more than the story I’m enjoying the new characters; well, the infusion of older characters into the still-new story. Last issue Morrison found a way to include Kathy Kane, and this time we got The Hood. Even though my familiarity with The Hood is vague at best (first appearing in the 1990′s Shadow of the Bat) he fit here like a glove. Morrison has been including English/British characters into his threads as far back as The Black Glove storyline and I don’t know if it was his English charm or just that I love his costume but I can’t get enough of this guy, although if the pattern in this title indicates anything it’s that we’ve seen the last of him.

Despite being a fan of Yanick Paquette’s art in this series so far, I can’t help but miss Chris Burnham from last issue. Granted the story was a slight departure from this, jumping back and forth in time and focusing much more on Batman’s history, Chris Burnham offered a fresh take on the title that for me, gave it a new breath, reverting back to the artist before last issue killed a little of my excitement. Let me be clear, Yanick Paquette draws one heck of a book (not everyone can make a woman with a scorpion motorcycle helmet look good) but my enthusiasm from last issue was extinguished a little. Course, it didn’t help that Morrison’s mixed pot of new villains, symbols and time jumping – which is getting harder and harder to follow – left me feeling dizzy at the end.

Batman Incorporated is about as experiential as we’ve seen Morrison handle the Bat-Universe. Bruce Wayne is completely out of our (the reader’s) comfort zone, interacting with characters that are either brand new or barely touched on in the modern era of comic books. The attention to detail, symbols, and story following required from the reader is arguably the highest it’s ever been. Granted timely released issues helps but I’m beginning to wonder if Morrison’s compiling style here will start to wear down it’s fans. Morrison is loyal to the process though, and as he’s proven in and out of his Batman work the payoff at the end is almost always worth it, but man this is a comic book workout if I’ve ever seen one.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsNew characters like The Hood keep things interesting and I think the Leviathan villain could be worth the hassleThis title is turning into homework. Morrison always expects a lot from his reader but this issue was too much. Rating65%
