Generation Hope #6 Review

Tagged with: Generation HopeGeneration Hope #6

A new light has awoken. Today I will be reviewing Generation Hope #6 . Please leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. Cyclops replaces Rouge with Kitty Pryde as the liaison between Hope’s team and the X-Men. The team starts to integrate with their live and roles on Utopia. When a new light is detected, Hope and the team head off to retrieve it. When they arrive at the location, the find a madhouse. It seems the light has taken mental control of an entire hospital. Luckily, Kenji is resistant and uses his powers to leash the rest of the team and give them immunity as well. As the team explores the hospital, the find the source of the light. A pregnant woman is issuing commands, but it is the baby she is carrying that has the powers. Hope moves in to touch the light when the team is attacked by all of the zombified denizens of the hospital. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. I’m very happy with this issue. I’m glad that some of the focus is shifted away from Hope and onto the rest of the kids. We need to build them up a bit so we can really get to know them and relate to them. Without that personal connection, no one is going to want to read this or any title. I am also very happy to see Kitty Pryde as their liaison. Kitty would make a wonderful mentor, considering that she was in their position all those years ago when she became the new kid on the block and had to adjust to the realities of the dangers that surround her and her kind. Plus, she had Wolverine as her mentor and can definitely put that knowledge to good use. I like the new light and it’s powers. We need a new telepath. The overall pace here was nice. A perfect jumping on issue for new readers. The art was pretty cool as well. Very clean and easy to decipher images. All in all, a very good issue. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

Where To Start Reading: Thor

Tagged with: Avengers  J. Michael Straczynski  Siege  Thor  Where To Start ReadingWhere To Start Reading: Thor

Our “Where to Start” articles act as a guide, giving you our best suggestions on where to start on a certain character or creators work. Every article lists several books, each in the character’s or creator’s chronological order despite it’s publication date (so the first choice is at the beginning of a characters career, the last is the furthest along). While in order each book was specifically picked as a good individual starting point; so feel free to start at the beginning, in the middle, or towards the end if you want to get caught up quickly. And if you have any more suggestions or questions just leave a comment.

Thor: Son of Asgard 2004

Thor: Son of Asgard follows our hero during his teenage days.  Throughout the twelve-issue maxi series, young Thor learns how to be a true warrior.  Along the way, he meets many of the recurring supporting cast seen throughout his nearly fifty-year history – his love Sif, his warrior friends Balder and the Warriors Three.  Throughout the series, his step-brother Loki, with the help from the Enchantress, who has long held feelings for Thor, try to litter the young hero’s path with sorceries that could cause some serious harm to the Thunder God.  This series has been adapted into an animated movie due May 17, 2011 called Thor: Tales of Asgard.

What to read next | Thor: First Thunder

Essential Thor Vol. 1 1962

This is where the world is introduced to the Mighty Thor.  Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Thor’s stories were heavily based on the characters of the actual Norse faith right down to the idea of Ragnarok, the end of days for the world as the Norse saw it.  To the exception of The Destroyer, all the characters that will figure prominently in the movie got the first appearances in these first thirty stories featured in Journey Into Mystery.  Not to mention, you get some really cool art from Jack Kirby that would later serve as a template in creating the New Gods characters at DC.

What to read next | Essential Thor Vol. 2 – 5

Avengers Masterworks Vol. 1 1963

Thor’s rivalry with his evil step-bro Loki was a massive assist in creating Marvel’s most powerful super-team, the Avengers.  It was Loki’s interference that he hoped would lead a confused and manipulated Hulk into direct conflict with the Thunderer.  In actuality, Loki hoped it would lead to the death of his do-gooding step-brother.  Unfortunately for the trickster, the plan backfired and the result was the Avengers.  In these early issues, you get a lot of Hulk/Thor action, the discovery of a still-living Captain America, and confrontations with Namor and the Masters of Evil.  It’s every bit what a grandiose Silver Age superhero book should be and more!

What to read next | Avengers Assemble Vol. 5

Thor Visionaries – Walt Simonson, Vol. 1 1983

No writer or artist is held in such high esteem as Walt Simonson during his lengthy, four year run on Thor.  Right off the bat, he creates a new hero in Beta Ray Bill (a character that to this day still hangs out with Thor and cosmic heroes) and a new villainess in Lorelei.  Lorelei wasn’t exactly as important as Beta Ray Bill, nor was she exactly as menacing as her sister, Amora (The Enchantress), but she did provide her sister with the ability to mature as a character and realize where she’d gone wrong in her pursuit of Thor, Amora’s one true love.  Every creator since has had to be compared to Simonson in both art and story, and thanks to him, many people of Generation X who read comics were huge fans of Thor.

What to read next | Thor Visionaries- Walt Simonson Vol. 2 & 3

Thor, Vol. 1 (Dan Jurgens) 1998

Dan Jurgens’ long run on the series is second only to Simonson’s in my opinion, but it did do something that Simonson didn’t have to – the relaunched title had been gone for a few years and needed to come back big time.  Jurgens’ Thor was much like Simonson’s in the idea that he would be battling cosmic threats, and major players throughout the Marvel Universe.  Since he had returned to the fold from being in an alternate reality, Thor’s return to the Marvel U proper needed to be as epic as possible, and, for the most part, Jurgens’ delivered.  This also marked the last time I really was excited about John Romita Jr. artwork.

What to read next | Avengers Assemble Vol. 1

Thor: Lord Of Asgard 2001

Odin has perished and Thor is now the undisputed Lord of Asgard.  This arc would begin a larger story toward the end of Dan Jurgens’ run on the title that found the new Lord of Asgard pondering the purpose of his people in relation to humans.  Decisions that Thor makes has consequences to both he and the Asgardians that as their presence in peoples’ everyday lives grows, his own view of how everyone should life begins to take very interesting turns that surprised every longtime reader.

What to read next | Thor: Gods on Earth, Thor: Spiral, Thor: The Reigning & Thor: Gods and Men

Avengers Disassembled: Thor 2004

Michael Oeming takes over from Dan Jurgens for one single arc.  This story would be the last Thor story for three years, and completely removes the God of Thunder at the worst possible time for his friends and the rest of the Marvel Universe.  Thor realizes that the time of Ragnarok (the End of Days for the Norse belief) has come.  What surprises, and even angers, him more is that Ragnarok is a sham.  The Asgardians die only to be reborn over and over again in an endless cycle of existence.  As Lord of Asgard, Thor has the ability alter this forever and takes advantage.  He goes about Ragnarok differently and puts an end to the cycle in ways none of us could ever have seen coming.

What to read next | Civil War

Thor (J. Michael Straczynski) Vol. 1-3 2007

Despite the destruction of the Asgardian cycle, the universe seems to have different plans.  After his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, crash lands outside Broxton, Oklahoma, Thor is called back into existence.  He decides to resurrect the rest of the Asgardian race when he finds their souls trapped within humans all over the world.  He rebuilds Asgard, but decides to keep it hovering just above the surface of Earth instead of a heavenly pocket in space.  Thor is back, but things aren’t quite as happy as one might think.

What to read next | Thor: Latverian Prometheus

Siege 2010

With Asgard hovering just above U.S. soil, and maniacally conservative Norman Osborn in charge of national security, Osborn strikes a deal with Loki to evict the Asgardians from the Earthly plane.  Osborn invades Asgard with his merry band of thugs and lackeys nearly laying waste to the entire population of Asgard.  As help arrives in the form of Thor’s old buddies Captain America and Iron Man, Osborn uses his big gun, The Sentry, to deliver the final blow and reduce Asgard to rubble.  This is a particularly accessible story as it closes a dark chapter in the Marvel Universe and opens a new one that leads directly to what is going on now and doesn’t really pull any punches.

What to read next | Thor: Siege Aftermath

Thor: The World Eaters 2011

With Asgard laid waste by Osborn’s siege, the downtrodden Asgardians must face another problem…  A race of beings from another dimension wishes to take Asgard’s place in the Norse religion’s World Tree.  To do so, these red-skinned warriors have to eliminate anything that opposes them.  Unfortunately for them, a resurrected Asgardian has other plans for them and comes back in time to repel the beasts and begin the process of returning Asgard’s majesty to its proper place.  If you’re reading Fear Itself, and like what Matt Fraction’s doing, this was his first arc on the title.  This is also the final arc of the current volume, but fear not…  Thor can be found in the pages of two series – Journey Into Mystery and The Mighty Thor.

Batman Vs. Punisher: Fantasy Battle Tournament

Tagged with: Batman  Fan Fiction  Fantasy Battle Tournament  Punisher

Batman Vs Punisher

Stepping into the ring for our opening Fantasy Battle Tournament is the Dark Knight versus the deadly street vigilante. The fans have been polled. Their votes have been recorded. Let the battle begin:

Darkness. All he sees is darkness. Not a problem. The Punisher is used to the dark. He lives in it his entire life, reveling in it’s cold, silent comfort. He thrives in the shadows, bringing his righteous vengeance down upon the criminals and wrongdoers of the world. Right now, though, he has to assess the situation. How did he get here? What is going on? The last thing he remembers is going to sleep.

Suddenly, there’s a flash of light. A voice speaks in his head. “Defeat your enemy and you live. Lose, and you die. Refuse to fight and I’ll kill you both.”

“Who are you?” yells the Punisher.

The only answer is a laugh. Then the light of moon fills his eyes. He looks around. He’s in an alley in a city much like Manhattan. However, there is no Gotham City police department in Manhattan. At least his weapons are here. Guns, knives, grenades. He is armed for war. So where is the enemy he is supposed to fight? The Punisher starts to move, canvassing the area. No one is around. The streets are empty. No life of any kind can be seen. Not a rat on the ground or a bird in the sky. Suddenly, while looking up, The Punisher sees something. In the distance, on top of a building, something moves. A cape, or a man in a cape. The Punisher pulls his rifle out and looks through the scope. He was right. It is a man in what appears to be the costume of a bat. Sitting perfectly still. Hiding in the shadows. If not for the wind moving his cape slightly, the Punisher would never have noticed him. Taking careful aim and adjusting for the wind, the Punisher shoots his enemy.

“Not bad” whispers a voice behind him. The Punisher turns but no one is there.

“I’m sure the stone gargoyle wearing my spare cape is quite dead” says Batman, stepping out from a side alley.

Without any hesitation, the Punisher pivots and begins unloading his two 9mm guns at his strange opponent. Batman is ready. Diving into the alley he just emerged from, Batman leaps to safety. At the same time, he pulls smoke pellets from his utility belt and tosses them on the ground while turning on the infra-red/night vision visors in his mask. The Punisher responds by tossing a grenade into the smoke and diving for cover. The resulting blast is devastating. Cautiously, the Punisher stands, just as a batarang slams into his hand, numbing it, and causing him to drop his guns. Moments later, two more batarangs hit him in the chest and thigh. The Punisher, realizing that his enemy can see him through the smoke and flames, tosses a flash grenade. The scream from his enemy tells him his ploy worked. Running into the smoke, the Punisher crashes into a figure who immediately flips him over onto his back. The Punisher now knows his enemy is a trained fighter. Pulling out his knife, the Punisher moves in, hoping to end it quick. The Batman has other ideas. Easily parrying the injured Punisher’s thrusts, Batman quickly disarms him. Minutes later, Batman is battering the Punisher into unconsciousness.

Standing over his fallen enemy, Batman yells into the night. “I’ve beaten my enemy. Now return the people of Gotham and come out and face me.”

The only answer he receives is a laugh and darkness.

The Winner: Batman

With a landsliding 93% of the votes, Batman is the winner and moves on to round two. Don’t forget to keep voting for the next battles…

Wolverine #8 Review

Tagged with: WolverineWolverine #8

The demonic arc finally, (please let it be over), comes to an end. Today I will be reviewing Wolverine #8. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. Inside Wolverine’s mind, a battle is raging for his very soul. Even with the help of Emma Frost and others, Wolverine is failing. With no other options, Nightcrawler releases the Phoenix, hidden deep in Wolverine’s mind. Igniting into the Phoenix Force, she blasts all of the demons as well as everyone else out of Wolverine’s head. In the real world, Cyclops restrains himself from delivering the killing blow to Wolverine’s body as he mutters Jean’s name. After the dust settles, Wolverine sets out on a quest. A quest for revenge. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. Please Marvel gods, hear my cry. Please remove the ridiculous man who is drawing this book from your payroll and send him back to wherever you found him. He is ruining what could have been an amazing display of artwork. I have a feeling that if this book was drawn by anyone with even a marginal bit of ability to separate and distinguish objects on the page, this book would be a thousand times better. Every face looked alike. Every image was blended with every other image. There was little to no attention to minor details. A total visual massacre. At least the story was somewhat bearable. It was nice to see Wolverine’s inner rooms. I found that funny and original. I loved the return of Jean and Kurt, even if it they weren’t real. I also like how the writer keeps the option of Jean and Kurt not being dead still on the table. I am really happy that Wolverine might be heading out alone for the next few issues when he seeks his revenge. (I hope it’s alone. This is a solo book, right?) I am curious to see who the Red Right Hand is and what their beef with Wolverine is. So far this title has been pretty crappy. I really hope a new direction is on the way as well as a new artist. (PLEASE GET A NEW ARTIST!!!) That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

Again, it’s so frustrating to want to like a book so much and be so turned off by the art. The last issue and this one had decent stories, but the art overshadowed both of them. Not to mention this is a Jason Aaron book; that name must not mean as much to Marvel as it does to folks who follow Scalped. Ouch, hurts to say, but it’s true – get a f*cking decent artist on Jason Aaron’s Wolverine title or I will not buy it anymore.
