Journey Into Mystery #622 Review

Tagged with: Fear Itself  Journey Into Mystery  Kieron Gillen  ThorJourney Into Mystery #622

Kieron Gillen returns to Asgard as, for at least the fourth time in history, the name of this book switches – this time back to it’s original title, Journey Into Mystery.

Loki returned in the pages of Matt Fraction’s run on Thor.  It wasn’t the most popular of decisions the God of Thunder has made.  Now Loki is being treated like the red-headed stepgod of the realm.  No one wants to really talk to him.  Some, including Volstagg, would like to actually kill the little guy.  If it wasn’t for the fear of what Thor would do, someone would have probably killed the kid by now.  In a way, though, Thor’s hope that Loki would have a chance to start all over and make different choices in life may be coming into fruition.  After a series of clues leads the boy into a chamber deep in the walls of Asgard, he comes face to astral projected face of his older self.  After learning why Loki would have led Osborn to Asgard only to turn sides and get destroyed when trying to defeat the Void, the new Loki turns him into a magpie and advisor (of sorts) and heads out to make a new destiny for himself.

Let me first say that having Kieron Gillen on this book is awesome.  I loved how he wrote his issues of Thor.  I loved how much he threw himself into the Asgardian lore.  His issues were rich and, at times, even artistic on a visual and story level.  So, when I learned he was going to be the writer of this series with its new/old branding, I knew we’d get some good stuff.

That being said, I do think people need to be aware that Thor is not the star of this book.  He’ll be there, but this is likely going to be more about the Asgardians as a whole, and, probably for a while, Loki specifically.  I hope people don’t shy away from this book just because of that because I think this is going to be a very different type of book that will be interesting to look at and read.  I definitely think this will help us better understand the whole of Thor’s world outside his mega-giant-super-adventures with the Avengers, or on his own against Frost Giants and whatnot.

Dougie Braithwaithe joins Gillen again on the art duties.  His style is very beautiful.  It’s almost as if you are looking at sequential paintings.  There’s such a soft, and almost organic, feel to the art that’s really pleasing to the eyes.  I guess you could say that it perfectly fits the earthy tones of Asgard and matches the texture of the Asgardian lifestyle.

All in all, it’s a good start.  It ties into Fear Itself by building toward and eventually showing Odin taking his people back to Asgard’s original perch in space and time.  As is the case in many events, sometimes the tie ins don’t specifically depict things properly.  We saw in Fear Itself #1 that Loki was in Broxton when Thor and Odin fought leading to Odin removing Asgard from it’s earthly plane.  Here, he’s right there in the action.  That’s a common thing only because the people working on this book doesn’t know everything the main event’s creative team is doing.  I’m not going to complain or say anything else about it just because I know how those things play out on small scales like that.

So, go check this out if you want something a little different but still existing in a world with characters you recognize.  Don’t look for a lot of action right off the bat.  Either way, I’m always looking forward to seeing with Kieron Gillen can give me next.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsSolid start by Gillen and Braithwaithe. Gillen just knows how to work with these characters and situations. Braithwaithe's art is beautiful and helps me feel as though I'm there in Asgard. Not much action, but I can only assume some is on the way. Some may not completely follow or understand the first few pages. Rating75%
