5 Ronin Review

Tagged with: 5 Ronin  Peter Milligan5 Ronin

A look at some of our favorite characters from a different perspective. Today I will be reviewing the 5 Ronin weekly mini-series. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the books. Set in the 1600s of Feudal Japan, 5 Ronin focuses on 5 individuals from that era.

Issue 1 tells the tale of a band of Ronin, who all look alike and cannot die, who swore to avenge their master who was killed on the battlefield. One of them turns traitor and kills the rest until the last Ronin finds him and kills him. But not before he learns that it was the Daimyo who set up his master and the Ronin.

Issue 2 focuses on a repentant monk who seeks peace and to be left alone, only to find himself being drawn back into battle. When the battle commences, his killer instincts and rage consume him and turn him onto a killing monster. After the battle, being saddened by all of the death he caused, the monk leaves, alone with his sorrow and regret.

Issue 3 describes the story of a man who returns from war, only to find that his land and family were killed and taken over by the Daimyo while he was away. He vows revenge and swears to punish the men who did this. He goes on a killing spree on all of the soldiers who were responsible. Finally, he sets his sights on the Daimyo himself.

Issue 4 tells of a young girl who is sold into sex slavery when the Daimyo steals her land and her father kills himself. She becomes and expert of men, almost able to read their minds. Her plan is to bide her time until the Daimyo hears of her sexual prowess and asks her into his bed. There she will kill him. That is until a Ronin (from issue #1) comes to her and tells her of his plan to kill the Daimyo. She tries to stop him because she wants to extract vengeance herself but in the end, the Ronin is too powerful for her and she lets him go.

Issue 5 brings everything to a close. It tells the tale of a fool. A skilled swordsman yet completely insane fool who was betrayed by the Daimyo and has come to return the favor by killing him. The battle is fierce but the madman succeeds. The Daimyo is dead. The fool, being a fool, goes on his way. The monster looking for redemption decides to build a sanctuary. The killer, being robbed of his prey, decides to look for something similar to kill. The woman, having no other skills or goals, returns to whoring. Lastly, The Ronin, having nothing to avenge, wanders on.               And that’s the books.

So let’s talk opinions. This mini series was beyond incredible. Peter Milligan tells an epic of a story that connects the life of five individuals. He stays true to the characters they represent and the proud history that they already have established. The artists, while there are five of them, draw this epic out stunningly. Feudal Japan is amazing. The action and fight scenes fly off the page. The landscapes are a sight to behold. The Samurai garb and clothing are spot-on. It’s been a long time since I’ve read an alternate universe tale this good. You are immersed into this time period from the first page. Their lifestyles and traditions are clearly presented and explained. The whole feel of the story made me think of those old school kung-fu movies I used to watch as a kid. The whole “many heroes unite to defeat a common enemy” thing was the unifying theme. This was a brilliant piece of storytelling and it left you with some life lessons. Life your life to the fullest every day and don’t let rage, or vengeance, or hate, or anger consume you. In the end, even the biggest tyrant can be toppled by a fool.  That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
