The Ultimate Avengers and New Ultimates are at each other’s throats, and after nearly three issues, I finally understand how this ties into the whole “Death of Spider-Man” storyline in the Ultimate Marvel Universe.
The Ultimates are trying to figure out how Nick Fury could have gone so bad as to sell super soldiers to countries that may not have a great deal of love for the United States. On top of that, they are also trying to figure out how to get the Triskelion out of Iran before they consider it an act of war and come down hard on America. Suddenly Nick Fury shows up with his Avengers to attack S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ. The plan is simple, capture Carol Danvers so she can be dealt with as the traitor they believe she is. The two teams throw down in the middle of New York City. With each of the Avengers separated by a member of the Ultimates, Captain America gets a hold of Nick Fury. Believing that Cap will turn Fury over to S.H.I.E.L.D. only to be put to death, the Punisher is left to make a hard choice. He decides to kill Cap, but out of nowhere, Spider-Man jumps in front of the bullet and takes it for Cap.
Mark Millar certainly keeps the book rolling along and hardly pauses for us to take a breath. The action is fast and furious as members of each team take each other on. After a couple disappointing arcs, this one is much better than I could have hoped for. This issue in particular is exciting and a bit nerve racking. No one is listening to each other or stopping to try to figure out who the hell is really behind all this mess. It’s more or less the classic formula when two teams get together, but this one seems tweaked a little bit by the idea that these heroes can (and will) kill one another if their orders are to do so. That alone adds a little extra excitement to the story.
Now the question is “How did we get here?” Like I said, neither of the teams are listening to one another and both sides feel the other is lying. It’s certainly clear that Spider-Man’s last minute involvement (which if I hadn’t peeked at the newest Ultimate Spider-Man issue that came out today, I wouldn’t have had any clue what the hell he was doing there) will bring the two teams together to take on the big baddie that has been pulling the strings all along. It’s kinda funny… The Punisher has tried for 35 years to kill Spider-Man eventually leading them to be teammates a time or two when the situation called for it. He finally shoots Spidey, and it’s a complete accident.
For the first time in a while, I can honestly say that I cannot wait for the next issue to see how these two teams can reconcile and work with each other against the greater threat.
A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsFast paced and exciting. Millar and Leinil Yu paint a picture that tears through each page with barely a minute to catch our breaths before Spidey's last second save of Cap sucks the air out of the room.If you didn't see the last few pages of Ultimate Spider-Man, you get a bit of a Deus Ex Machina feeling to the climax, leaving you to say exactly what Punisher did.
