Teen Titans #93 Review

Tagged with: JT Krul  Solstice  Superboy  Teen Titans  Wonder GirlTeen Titans #93

JT Krul finally introduces the new Titan he’s been building up towards to the team in Teen Titans 93. As when our new hero, Solstice, met Wonder Girl before, the link is their parents’ archeological careers. Kiran’s (Solstice’s real name) folks vanished while on a dig, as seen a few issues ago. Cassie’s mom knows them and was there, so she called Cassie, and the whole team showed up to help. Introductions are made, and Raven shies away from Solstice’s apparently light based powers, and Kid-Flash seems smitten with the newest hero.

After a super-speed search by Bart turns up nothing, the team splits up for a more intensive investigation. As an interesting bit of sub-plot, Superboy stands up for Wonder Girl, telling Red Robin she did well leading them and he might want to back off some, and is then surprised when Tim tells him Cass asked Tim to take over the leadership slot. What they then find is a demon who seems to be behind the disappearances. They fall into the somewhat unfortunate trope of “Wow, this new villain we’ve never seen is trashing our whole team. Glad this new hero is with us, who seems to be the only one whose powers work against him/her/it.” The demon, who we learn is called Tataka, vanishes with Cassie and her mother, taking them to some other dimension where a new and uglier demon shows up and swats Cassie aside with ease.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

Krul is one of the better writers at DC these days in my opinion, and I say that even with him having written the absolutely horrid “Rise of Arsenal.” He has a nice grasp of these characters, and the long standing friendship among many of them. Tim reflecting on being back with his friends is well handled, as he astutely picks up the tensions among the various ex- and almost- couples. That’s an interesting aside, this team has no romances going on at all at present, either among the team nor any of them seeing folks outside the team. Tim also comments on Rose/Ravager being pissed at him, and not knowing why. She was trying really hard to get into bed with him the last time they were both on the team, I wonder if she’s still harboring feelings for him? Kon taking Cassie’s part as leader, and then being surprised she gave it up was also a nice touch.

Like I touched on up above, I don’t like the team of skilled and competent heroes suddenly being utterly useless until the new character shows their tricks/skills/powers. It also seems that Cassie gets slapped around far too easily a good bit here. Remember Cassie, daughter of ZEUS? Some time ago, she was allegedly given a major power upgrade, and nothing seems to have come of it since then. Our opposite numbers in this seem a bit too sharply and obviously set up here, too: Solstice has glowing, light based power, and the demon is described several times as so intensely dark. I confess, I’m also a bit tired of Raven having to break contact with someone because “Their evil is too intense/powerful/strong for me to resist.”
