Avengers Academy #12 Review

Tagged with: Avengers  Avengers Academy  Christos GageAvengers Academy #12

Look who’s all grown up!  It’s time for the students of Avengers Academy to take down one of the old Avengers team’s worst of enemies, Korvac.

With the help of Korvac’s estranged wife Carina, older versions of each of the students have been plucked out of their natural timestream and sics them after Korvac, who, mind you, is currently standing over the battered bodies of a defeated Avengers team.  Despite getting the chance to live for a little while in these older, more powerful bodies, all things aren’t great.  Veil is so gaseous now she can’t even touch another person.  Hazmat is ten years older, but still stuck in her suit.  Striker is struck by a blast from Korvac and is killed, but is reverted back to younger self and flees no longer wishing to risk his life for some domestic dispute.  Mettle and Finesse are beaten to the point of death.  Finally, Veil realizes that she must save her own life and is able to merge her body into Korvac’s.  She’s there long enough for Hazmat to deliver the final blow and defeats him with anti-matter.  With Korvac gone, Carina reverts the students back to their normal bodies.  Well, she almost does.  Reptil remains in his older self because he liked the abilities he was given and feels it’s his best chance to make a difference.  Veil stops her ticking time bomb of mortality.  The others are left dealing with a renewed sense of fear and disappointment for the chances of ever being normal again.

Christos Gage has made a name for himself by being able to take brand new characters and very quickly making people care about them.  He cut his teeth in the now defunct Avengers: The Initiative, but what he did there with new and complete junk characters was golden.  Now, with this set of new characters entirely his own, he’s building an intriguing and deeply identifiable series that, in my own personal belief, is on par with what Teen Titans did for the young heroes of DC.  These kids all have their problems, probably more so than the Titans.  Each one has a very unique personality.  How this team hasn’t completely imploded is just as amazing as any group of normal people in the same confined setting.  They get the chance to see what they become and how confident they are.  While their younger selves still struggle with their problems, they get a chance to see that things aren’t all that bad and they have a life beyond these petty teenage troubles.  The next phase of their lives will be how they deal with these issues to get the opportunity to be what they saw and felt in their future bodies.

While Veil is taking the chance to save herself with these new powers before being returned to her normal timeline, others like Striker is showing that maybe he’s not feeling so good about being at the Academy.  Mettle and Hazmat realized they are prisoners inside their own bodies for all their lives.  Mettle drops his happy-go-lucky persona and Hazmat shows a softer side to her that don’t get to see too often.  Here are two people in the same boat sharing a really sad, but touching moment.  It’s a scene that should tell anyone reading the series that Gage is a particularly powerful writer.  Along with Tom Raney’s art, the scene is quiet, but says so much about how they feel and gives you a new side of these two characters that shows no matter how much potential you have, sometimes you have to find strength to get over some of the biggest disappointments in your life.  Basically, it’s the story of every high schooler ever.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsGreat characterization, and particularly powerful last few pages. Gage is a writer that not only got a chance to create his own characters, but instantly gave them personalities that I can't help but love.None Rating100%
