Streets of Gotham #21When this title first emerged, I was so into it. I loved the “Leviathan” storyline with its gritty feel and the idea that Gotham was a place devoid of hope, marred by death, cruelty, crime. Then the Zsasz storyline wherein he kidnapped orphaned children and caged them for underground fight rings was amazing in terms of bringing back his character and making him relevant. Paul Dini was the master of this title and I am sad to say it is coming to a close.
issue 21 is the end of the House of Hush storyline that sought to bring some kind of closure to the story involving Tommy Elliott. I hoped for so much more here after Heart of Hush and really didn’t find myself satisfied. The issues does bring in some newer ideas and closes some plot holes. I don’t know how I feel about Jane Doe being a character in the Gotham crime world; I almost just don’t buy it.
In terms of how they dealt with Pierce, I found that extremely unsatisfying as well. Without spoiling anything, they needed to just put it on a shelf instead of leaving it open. The world of Batman (Inc., now) is much too large and all-encompassing to be creating new second class villains.
I did, however, the last two pages. They said some very existential things about the character of Hush and who he really is. It was gratifying to see Dini’s writing here; I found it to be very well-done and a great way to end this series which will now no longer cease to be. Goodbye, Streets of Gotham.
