Teen Titans #94 Review

Tagged with: JT Krul  Kid Flash  Superboy  Teen TitansTeen Titans #94

JT Krul tells us of “The Power of Myth,” in Teen Titans #94, continuing Solstice’s less than auspicious debut on the team, although it’s really not her fault. While she tells most of the team about the mythical story of epic Ramayana, Wonder Girl fights some of the characters from that story, and loses badly. Monsters 1, Titans O for those keeping score. Mostly through Red Robin’s efforts and knowledge, the team gets into the same mystic world this fight was in, and starts searching for Cassie. Superboy can’t find her with his senses, and Red Robin vetoes Kid-Flash speeding off to find her, wanting to keep everyone together. This lasts until the first fight, when Raven can’t stand being around Solstice’s light powers anymore and runs off. Everyone scatters, Gar naturally going after Raven, and Ravager and Red Robin both get captured. One of the creatures shifts into Ravager’s form, and leads the team off to what is likely some form of trap or ambush, after Raven makes some snarky comment to Beast Boy about leaving her alone as he’s “so good at it these days.” The issue ends with the big blue baddie, Rankor apparently, scheming to wreak havoc everywhere, sitting on his throne above his prisoners. Final score, Monsters 3, Titans 0 as we wait to be continued.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

There were some good moments here, like Beast Boy taking charge as the leaders go missing. He is about the most experienced one here, with the debatable exception of the then-missing Red Robin. The team still largely feels like close friends, as they should, with an annoying sister or something, played by Ravager.

Raven having major problems with Solstice’s powers seems almost contrived, and clearly sets up for future drama (like we need more of that). To coin a phrase, the team isn’t big enough for both of them. Raven’s snapping at Gar was really uncalled for. They’ve made such a mess of that relationship that I’ve lost track of who broke up with who most recently, but he’s never gone out of his way to ignore her certainly.

All in all, this wasn’t a bad issue, but I think Krul is slipping a bit. Between Tim questioning his leadership (is this an epidemic? Dick’s doing the same in JLA), Raven’s snapping, and the Raven/Solstice imbalance, there are just too many odd little soap operatic developments. I’m hoping this one wraps up soon.
