Red Robin #22 Review

Red Robin #22

To be honest, I am not sure what to make of this issue. Larger ideas like religion can be used in literature to help readers seek their own truth. I am not opposed to it; in fact, I rather liked the first couple of pages. I, as a Bat-reader, tend to get very caught up in the hypothetical “real lives” of these fake people. So, contrary to another review I just read (it’s Neb, of  iFanboy if you must know) I DO care about Tim’s belief and faith in God or a god.

But the issue fell flat in parts. The major problem being the fact that this is the first of three crossovers with Batman and Gotham City Sirens. Crossovers can work but I would prefer that my solid go-to books like this one are not involved. It can be confusing if you don’t read all involved parties and let’s face it: you turn off a reader with something like that and you could be dead in the water. I’m looking at you, DC. Ahem…

The Crusader is a religious fanatic, semi-teaming up with Azrael and they’re basically judging Gotham. I.E. You don’t believe and you die. Makes SO much sense. The story was made for Tim’s internal battle about his faith. Conclusion: he has none. What did we learn? Little. Ra’s is the commanding hand behind the Angels of Death and apparently, because Gotham doesn’t “believe” they’re to die at dawn. But really, I’m wont to believe that Al-Ghul would blow up the city for far less heinous crimes. So in the end, I don’t buy this.

If DC thinks I am going to pick of Sirens just because this story is continued there, well they’re wrong. I am sure some die-harders will but for me, I want to get back to the Red Robin I have enjoyed for the last year. This book has always been so solid and now the crossovers are ruining it.
