Uncanny X-Men #534 Review

Tagged with: Greg Land  Matt Fraction  Uncanny X-MenUncanny X-Men #534

The Quarantine story arc comes to an exciting close. Today I will be reviewing Uncanny X-Men #534 . Please leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

So let’s talk about the book. Shaw chases down Emma and tears her head off. Literally. Too bad Emma mind tricked him into thinking he did it. With no other options left, Emma snuffs out Shaw’s memories and leaves him in the middle of nowhere to fend for himself. Meanwhile, the last powered X-Men are getting overwhelmed by the newly pseudo powered mutants until Cyclops arrives to save the day. Using tactics and skill, Scott manages to outwit Lobe and destroy all of the manufactured powers, but not before one of the original five test subjects manages to steal a bag full of power drugs and flee the scene. In addition, we get a reprint of Avengers Academy #1. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. Color me impressed. Matt Fraction has an amazing ability to handle multiple plot stories and never lose focus. This is making me get more and more excited to see what he does with this year’s marvel “event” Fear Itself. If he does as great of a job as he did with this arc, it should be amazing. I’m very happy with the way this story ended. Scott Summers is one VERY smart tactician. I keep underestimating his ability to plan ahead. (So did the Skrulls and they got their ass handed to them as well.) He is really being developed into a great general. Wolverine was great this issue. He actually broke his powers down to bare basics. The cuts will heal. The pain lasts forever. Emma versus Shaw was a bit of a cop out at the end. Wasn’t this how Xavier versus Magneto ended? Remember the result of that? Onslaught!! I was hoping for a game changer by Emma but Kitty messed that up by being there. Without Kitty’s presence, I feel we might have seen Shaw’s final breath. The art was really good this issue. Wolverine looked particularly tough and menacing. (He reminded me of a pissed off Kung-Fu butcher from those old Shaw Brothers movies.) Cyclops looked like a Ghostbuster on that awesome splash page. (Colossus with a sledge is just funny) Speaking of funny, there was an uncanny amount of hidden humor in this issue and it worked quite well. The description boxes didn’t piss me off as much as last issue. Al in all, a great story arc. Can’t wait to see what’s next. As for the reprint, I had no problem with it as I bought it when it first came out. My one gripe is that it wasn’t a mutant book reprint but an Avengers book reprint. What do the Avengers Academy kids have to do with the X-Men? A reprint of New Mutants #1 or something along that nature would have made more sense. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.
