Batgirl #20 Review

Batgirl #20

Part two of two of the “Tunnel Vision” storyline uncovers a lot of plot points, propelling us forward in Steph’s crazy world of Batgirl. For starters, we now know who exactly our speedster is, though it – in the larger scheme of things – is not exactly important. Just a slacker college kid lacking identity, Xane accepted an “offer he couldn’t refuse” and helped the Reapers in their larger plan, headed up by an, as of now, unknown puppetmaster.

Back at the base of operations – Firewall – Steph is checking out her new custom die cutter for making batarangs, which is totally awesome. Along with that, she’s got a sweet new ride, whose full potential is unleashed later in the issue.

Steph and Babs share a semi-touching moment, full of the endless wit that Miller always brings, and then we see Stephanie in class at the pivotal moment of the issue. It is at the point when her classmate is a.) memorizing a map and b.) gets a phone call that prompts him to bolt from the classroom that Batgirl puts two and two together. Aaaand we have our speedster. The foiling part of her plan was pivotal upon the transferring of older bills through a once unfinished tunnel under Gotham city. Launching into combat mode, her car – The Compact – turns into full on battle tanks with rooftop machine gun. Oh yeah.

There is a scene I don’t quite get – because I don’t read Birds of Prey – wherein we see Barbara at Kord tower tracking Batgirl and researching a thug from the last BoP issue. After reading our own Wayland’s review of it, I have to agree that I like to see when writers are communicating like this and linking info. Shouldn’t things mesh within the DC universe? I think so!

Speedster foiled, Stephanie does a little case closed follow-up with Det. Gage. He leaves her with a non-committal admission that he used to be a “college student” but we all know that the quotations imply a whole lot more. In some ways, this makes me distrust him in a small way. But we shall see.

All in all, I was pleased with this issue. Not every single one can be 100 percent amazing but this is consistent in its quality. Art = skillful. Writing = masterful. Overall product = fabulous!
