New Avengers #11 Review

Can the New Avengers save Mockingbird’s life?  Are those 1950s Avengers able to track down and put an end to the Red Skull?  Brian Michael Bendis, Mike Deodato, and Howard Chaykin are the men behind those answers…

Bobbi has been taken to the hospital by Spider-Man, the Thing, and Dr. Strange, but Strange knows things are in a real bad way as they are helpless while the doctors and nurses try fruitlessly to revive a flatlined Mockingbird.  Back at the H.A.M.M.E.R. base where Superia just knocked the Avengers down a notch, the H.A.M.M.E.R. agents are being round up by the authorities and the team is left to try to figure out how they got into such a bad situation.  That’s when Spider-Man puts two and two together and throws out the suspicion that Victoria Hand has set them up.  Or has she?  She reveals everything to Steve Rogers after breaking the hard news to Hawkeye that Bobbi is in the hospital.  She knows the team will put blame on her leaving Steve with a tough situation he needs to fix.

In 1959, Fury’s Avengers have been assembled and they plan to attack the Red Skull’s stronghold.  Unfortunately, for them, they don’t find the Red Skull, but instead a very familiar face…  Captain America.

I’m actually very intrigued by the two stories that are going on at the same time.  I haven’t a clue as to what the connection is yet, but on one side, you have the 1959 story that fits right in with Chaykin’s style and pretty reminiscent of his American Flagg comics.  The “Trojan horse” reveal had that wonderful mix of awesome and ridiculous that I frankly loved.  It felt like all those shows and movies in the 80s, like The A-Team and Chuck Norris movies, that are kinda hokey but leaves an impression in your brain that makes you love the awesomeness.

On the other side is the present day story with the current New Avengers.  It’s actually hard to say if this team has been all that successful yet.  In the first arc, they are in way over their heads with the mystical hocus pocus stuff.  In this arc, the mission went badly and Mockingbird is a little too close to the slab for comfort.  They’ve already dealt with the death of Dr. Voodoo, and now they are facing another possible casualty.  I know they won’t lose Bobbi (at least, logically, it makes no sense to bring her back only to kill her after a couple years), but this team is really having a hard time together.  As a reader, I can’t help but see there isn’t nearly as strong of leadership as the other two Avengers team.  Hell, I don’t think they are lead as well as Avengers Academy.  This team is very raw, and despite the experience on the team, this isn’t good.  At the very least, I think tension is rising on this team and it could very easily lead to a blow up.

All in all, I’m enjoying this arc.  I like how Deodato and Chaykin’s styles are being used to tell the two stories, and Bendis’ plot isn’t really dilly dallying around but keeping a nice even pace.  What’s the connection between the two eras?  No idea.  I mean, I don’t even have a guess at what is connecting these two eras.  So, that definitely means I’m looking forward to seeing how that plays out.

A COMIC BOOK BLOG RATINGProsConsBendis' script is nicely paced between the two stories. Deodato and Chaykin's art is definitely adding backbone to their respective stories. With what appears to be just one more issue left in the arc, I'm a little concerned the end's going to be rushed. Rating85%

I just can’t stomach Chaykin’s art. It’s atrocious. This may be blasphemy to some, but I think he’s got no business drawing comics. Maybe there was a time when his art was quality, but it’s not now. This arc can’t end soon enough.
