The Legion Of Super-Heroes #12 Review

Tagged with: Legion of Super Heroes  Legion of Super Villains  Paul LevitzThe Legion Of Super-Heroes #12

The Legion of Super Heroes is sent down many “False Trails,” as Paul Levitz continues to spin the tale of their epic clash with the Legion of Super Villains. One group of the vengeful LSV are on lawless Rimbor, seeking to recruit new members. Their effort is soon thwarted by a small team of Legionaries, as Colossal Boy continues his run in this title of “show up and get beaten immediately.” I am beginning to think Levitz doesn’t like our man Gim there. Back at HQ Brainy continues to try and cure Star Boy of the after effects of his trip to the past, which at the moment seems to involve “draining excess alternate realities” out of him, which lets us see many versions of poor Thom. Brainy stuns Dream Girl by saying he’s leaving to deal with matters on Colu, paying her about the best compliment you’re likely to get from him: “You’re entirely competent to oversee” his treatment. He rushes off, telling Professor Li her story will have to wait.

On Colu itself, Saturn Queen leads her forces to raid their data banks to hunt down the next world the Blue Flame wants them to destroy, the “world of the wise.” There’s more various fighting that ends inconclusively between the Heroes and Villains, and then an odd scene that seems to be missing bits. Mon-Lantern and the enigmatic Dyogene survey the ruins of the Rock of Eternity… at least, I think it is. The site is never named, and the dialogue hints that they are talking about either Shazam or Captain Marvel, but never name either one of them. It really seems to me like something got cut from this, a few panels, maybe even a whole page. The battle rages on back on Colu, with a few rather improbable match ups. Element Lad, who can transmute matter, is having problems with the fire powers of Sun Killer? Saturn Queen’s power increase, again courtesy of the mysterious Blue Flame, allows her to easily best Brainy and Earth-Man, leaving on her quest, and apparently abandoning Lightning Lord and martial artist Atta to fight even worse odds with the Legionnaires, thus ending the issue.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

This does have the feel of an epic story, if a somewhat slow paced one. If the Villains needed information, Colu was a great place to go for it. The attempt at recruiting made some degree of sense, but it seemed to be given up on too easily. Brainy’s trust in Dream Girl was a nice nod to both characters, even if he wasn’t exactly gracious with the compliment, which is fitting for him.

As I mentioned before, this just seems to be moving soooooo slowly. We still don’t know what the “world of the wise” is, although I’m still thinking Sorcerer’s World/Gemword, which I’m told is the same place. Most of what happened in this issue was a lot of fighting with no clear winners, no captures, no one eliminated from the story. Colossal Boy seems to only exist to be a target, as I commented above, which is unfair for such a veteran Legionnaire. And I just don’t buy that Jan/Element Lad would have problems with Sun Killer, certainly not for that long. The scene with Mon and Dyogene seemed really choppy. Overall, this doesn’t seem quite up to Levitz’s usual standards. I wonder if he’s starting to take on too much, between this major story and the ongoing Legion related tales in Adventure? It was also a bit frustrating having Li appear finally, only to be basically put on hold by Brainy.

I’m hoping we see more about what’s going on here soon, and learn which world the Blue Flame has targeted before Saturn Queen and her followers launch their attack on Oa. For that matter, more info on what the Blue Flame is would be nice. I really can’t think of a blue fiery creature/entity/being that’s been featured in DC before.
