Secret Six #32 Review

Tagged with: Gail Simone  Ragdoll  Scandal  Secret SixSecret Six #32

This month, things continue to go to Hell for the Secret Six. No, really, they are actually in Hell. Ragdoll turned on his team to get the cursed card from Neron, and was nearly killed by Scandal for his troubles. He ended up here in Hell, and was made a Prince. We eventually find out that this, and the reason he’s so screwed up back on Earth, is that apparently he was born without a soul. Metaphysically speaking, I’m not sure how he’s able to exist in Hell with no soul, but that’s another issue.

After some attempts to talk Ragdoll into playing nice (like that had a chance) the expected fight begins, with the returned Parademon knocking Scandal around as Ragdoll announces he’s soon to be married down here to solidify his position as advisor to Lady Blaze. In a few asides, Liana tries to escape from the nut-job that kidnapped her last issue, and fails. Catman deserts the team to use Etrigan as his guide to go find his father, who, as we’ve seen in the past, clearly belongs down here. The team as a whole is told when they die, they are all hell-bound, which shocks Bane, who believes himself a righteous man.

What sparked all this off, apparently, was Ragdoll was afraid he was going sane, partially due to the influence of Black Alice actually liking him and looking up to him. This led him to steal the card and end up down here. The big shocker for the cliffhanger occurs after Scandal insists, over and over, on being able to see Knockout, her dead girlfriend. Ragdoll finally agrees. Remember the wedding I mentioned earlier? Guess who ‘Doll is marrying? Knockout looks really creepy holding her bridal bouquet of dead flowers, in an outfit that’s part her costume and part wedding dress.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

Gail continues to impress me with her characterizations and ideas. Who but Ragdoll would be afraid of going sane? Well, aside from Joker anyway… Bane’s reaction to the announcement that he is to be damned is well done. It makes perfect sense to me that he’d be sent to Hell for all he’s done (he’s killed heroes, innocents, and enemies alike for one thing), but it’s also quite believable that he doesn’t think he belongs here. Deadshot has few lines this outing, but they are in keeping with his general fatalism and indifference to his own fate.

There’s not much I didn’t like here. Catman running off seems a bit odd, and going to see his father odder still, but I will hold judgment until we find out why he did this. For all I know he’s going to beat on the man some, and Mr. Blake Sr certainly has it coming. When Catman is confronted by a demon along the way, he bests it very easily, which seems a bit odd to me, but maybe the rules are different down in Hell. I’d also like an explanation as to how one of the New Gods ends up in the “regular” Hell.
