Darkwing Duck #11 Review

Tagged with: Boom Studios  Darkwing Duck  Morganna  SteelbeakDarkwing Duck #11

F.O.W.L. Disposition brings us the latest installment of the great struggle of Darkwing Duck and his foe Steelbeak, both working to stop the rise of Duckthulu. Elder Gods are usually no laughing matter, but hey, it’s Darkwing. There’s also plenty of action with Goslyn as Quiverwing Quack, and her extremely reluctant sidekick. Honker the Arrow Kid. Darkwing beats a mechanical walrus in a sword fight where the “blades” are a frozen Steelbeak and fellow FOWL defector Femme Appeal (I’m sounding like DW again…). Dark and Steel eventually find the huge altar to Duckthulu (decorated in part by a carving of Elliot, the animated critter from Disney’s Pete’s Dragon movie), while Femme, separated from them, rescues Quiverwing and AK, only for all of them to run into a huge squad of Egg-Men, FOWL’s flunkies.

In a not particularly surprising development, Steelbeak turns on Darkwing, knocking him cold from behind. It was, of course, all a set up, with Steelbeak luring DW here to be the major sacrifice to free Duckthulu. Elsewhere, Launchpad falls under the thrall of Duckthulu, and shuffles off with the other zombified St. Canard residents, which Morgana uses as a chance to sneak in, disguising herself. They had to trick DW into coming because he had to arrive of his own will to fulfill the requirements of the ritual, as well as being of “high spirits and exaggerated self-image,” which, let’s face it, is DW all over. Even Steelbeak looks a bit unnerved when Duckthulu begins to rise, ending the issue.

What I liked and what I didn’t:

More kinda silly heroic fun here. Darkwing gets himself in more trouble with his grandstanding, you’d think he’d eventually learn, which he, of course, never will for more than brief periods. But hey, it’s a good bit of who he is. Worse, his ego seems to have rubbed off on Goslyn over time, who inherited her adopted father’s tendency to get in wholly over his head. The Pete’s Dragon visual was another nice Easter Egg kinda thing, and it was all in good fun.

Steelbeak’s betrayal was predictable, but worked. I do sort of wish Goslyn could pull off the hero thing a bit more competently, but she’s still young, maybe she’ll learn. Then again, with DW as a role model, maybe not. Both of their hearts are in the right place, for all that the rest of them often isn’t.

I predict we’re going to learn that Femme is some kind of double agent, either out for herself, or a plant from SHUSH or some other agency. Steelbeak will realize how bad this is and help DW for real, and Goslyn will do something improbably well timed to help turn the tide. This book remains a lot of fun to read, and rarely for comics these days, is truly an enjoyable read that works for all ages. Oh, and BOOM! seems to have changed their name to “kaboom” for some odd reason, but hey, I can follow Goslyn’s logic better than that of company’s usually.
